This article focuses on BAf\u00f6G for university students.   <\/p>\n<p>BAf\u00f6G is distributed by the <strong>Office for Educational Support<\/strong> at your university&#8217;s student services department, which is typically located in the same building. Each office only serves its assigned university, so you can apply for BAf\u00f6G after enrolling\u2014though some exceptions exist in some federal states. BAf\u00f6G cannot be applied for retroactively.   <\/p>\n<h2>Historical overview<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1957<\/strong>: First educational grant according to the &#8220;Honnef model&#8221;, was awarded only to students at universities and equivalent colleges with particularly good performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1971<\/strong>: BAf\u00f6G was introduced as a 100% grant, establishing a legal right to education funding that could be claimed in court. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Until 2015<\/strong>: The government covered 65% of BAf\u00f6G costs, and the federal states paid 35%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From 2015<\/strong>: The government has taken over 100% of the financing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2021<\/strong>: 50 years of BAf\u00f6G! Required internships within a study program are also funded. <strong>Eligibility depends on citizenship, residency status, age, suitability, income, and assets.<\/strong> The exemption limit for personal assets is \u20ac15,000 if you\u2019re under 30, or \u20ac45,000 if you\u2019re over 30. Your income, as well as that of your parents and partner, is also considered, and the age limit to start studies is 45. Foreign students can receive BAf\u00f6G if they are long-term residents and integrated in Germany. Postgraduate courses are also supported if you haven\u2019t obtained another primary degree alongside your Bachelor\u2019s.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>BAf\u00f6G abroad<\/strong> is possible for up to one year. For stays in the EU or Switzerland, the entire program can be funded. Different BAf\u00f6G offices handle applications depending on the destination country, and applications should be submitted at least six months in advance.   <\/p>\n<p><strong>BAf\u00f6G without parental support<\/strong> is only possible in exceptional cases, as parents are generally required to support their children financially. Independent BAf\u00f6G is available under specific conditions, such as for evening high school students. <\/p>\n<h2>Funding details and special regulations<\/h2>\n<p>To continue receiving BAf\u00f6G after your fourth semester, <strong>you must show academic progress<\/strong>, typically by meeting ECTS credit requirements that prove steady study progression rather than grades. Even if you apply for BAf\u00f6G for the first time after four semesters, you must prove sufficient progress.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Siblings <\/strong>can also impact the amount of BAf\u00f6G awarded, as a higher exemption on parental income may apply depending on siblings&#8217; income. If you need to acquire <strong>knowledge in languages other than German, English, French, or Latin<\/strong>, your maximum funding period can be extended by one semester per language. Funding is also extended if studies are delayed due to <strong>disability, pregnancy, caring for a child under 14<\/strong>, or <strong>caring for a close relative in need<\/strong> (minimum care level 3). <strong>Serving on university committees<\/strong> can also extend funding. Additionally, extensions may apply if you fail an exam for the first time or due to other serious reasons.     <\/p>\n<h2>Funding amounts and conditions<\/h2>\n<p>BAf\u00f6G is awarded as a 50% grant and a 50% interest-free loan. Some components, like foreign tuition fees (up to \u20ac5,600 per study year), are full grants and don\u2019t need to be repaid. The monthly amount depends on your educational institution and living situation and is calculated as a flat rate.  <\/p>\n<p>There are full and partial grants: In 2021, 42.8% of students received a full grant (\u20ac633 to \u20ac934 per month), while 57.2% received a partial grant. <strong>Full grants<\/strong> are awarded if you\u2019ve worked full-time for a certain period or if your parents have low income. <strong>Partial grants<\/strong> require parental support based on their income. <strong>The monthly requirement is currently \u20ac511 if you live with your parents and \u20ac812 if you live independently.<\/strong> With health and care insurance supplements, the maximum amount is \u20ac934 (raised from \u20ac861 in 2023). Parental and partner income also affects the calculated requirement. In 2023, the parental income allowance increased by 20.75% (from \u20ac2,000 to \u20ac2,415), expanding BAf\u00f6G eligibility.       <\/p>\n<p>For each child under 14 living with you, there\u2019s a <strong>childcare allowance<\/strong> of \u20ac160, which doesn\u2019t need to be repaid and doesn\u2019t affect other social benefits. <strong>Students over 30<\/strong> may receive up to an additional \u20ac84 depending on their situation.<\/p>\n<h2>Funding duration<\/h2>\n<p>Funding lasts <strong>according to the standard study period<\/strong>, but extensions are possible for verifiable BAf\u00f6G-related reasons. Important: <strong>funding starts the month you apply<\/strong>, with no retroactive payments for earlier months, even if studies already began. So, apply at least the month your studies start!    <\/p>\n<p><strong>Funding ends upon graduation<\/strong>, program completion, study interruption, or reaching the maximum funding period based on the standard study duration. Once your final results are received, funding ends no later than two months after your last exam. BAf\u00f6G rates, allowances, and social allowances are reviewed and adjusted every two years.  <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-3571fe8 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"3571fe8\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-d329439\" data-id=\"d329439\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-73555ea elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"73555ea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em>According to the official BAf\u00f6G statistics, sponsored students received an average of \u20ac579 per month in 2021.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-f6da9fa elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"f6da9fa\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-12d505b\" data-id=\"12d505b\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-841caa6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"841caa6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Repayment of the loan<\/h2>\n<p>In principle, it is always worthwhile to apply, as only half of the amount has to be repaid. One half is thus intended as a gift, the other as an interest-free loan. In total, you have to <strong>pay back a maximum of \u20ac10,010 of the standard funding<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<p>Repayment generally <strong>starts five years after the last BAf\u00f6G payment <\/strong>(not the end of studies). The loan portion consists of <strong>up to 77 monthly installments of \u20ac130 over 20 years<\/strong>. Exceptions apply for extended study periods or a second course change, where BAf\u00f6G may only be offered as a bank loan, which is fully repayable with interest. <strong>Discounts <\/strong>are available for those who repay the loan in full before the repayment start date or make larger early repayments of at least \u20ac500.    <\/p>\n<h2>How do I apply?<\/h2>\n<p>Applications must be submitted <strong>in writing to the responsible Office for Educational Assistance<\/strong>. You can submit the application forms by post or electronically. Nationwide, there is the uniform <strong>online application &#8220;BAf\u00f6G-Digital&#8221;<\/strong> via the portal of the federal and state governments. Simply create a user account and send the application directly, without an additional signature.
