is no tension<\/strong> \u2013 they are the engine of every action.<\/li><li>Characters grow when they have to make decisions that hurt.<\/li><li>Anger, doubt, and contradictions make characters believable and vibrant.<\/li><li>A <strong>good dilemma<\/strong> changes the character &#8211; and touches the reader.<\/li><li><strong>Every scene needs at least one conflict<\/strong> that escalates.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a33b75d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a33b75d\" data-element_type=\"section\" Because stories without conflict are like landscapes without mountains \u2013 flat, boring, without depth. Conflicts are the engine that drives characters: they force us to make decisions, to react \u2013 and thus to develop. Readers love stories in which characters struggle, fail, change.<\/p><p>But many authors, especially women, shy away from intense conflicts. <strong>The fear of making a main character seem unsympathetic often paralyzes the scene<\/strong>. But strong contrasts don&#8217;t make characters unlikeable \u2013 they make them real. Intense conflicts lend authenticity and make strengths, weaknesses and values visible. As the self-publisher Bible points out, a story without a clear conflict quickly loses traction \u2013 <strong>conflicts are what binds readers emotionally<\/strong>.<\/p><h2>Conflicts create depth \u2013 and humanity<\/h2><p>A conflict that is too gentle remains meaningless, and too little resistance makes characters seem one-dimensional. Only when they are thrown into real tensions can their development be traced. Mistakes, setbacks and failures are part of it \u2013 if you only win, you remain static. A conflict is not necessarily loud or epic, but always existential. Every scene should contain at least one conflict \u2013 even if it is only quietly bubbling under the surface. Let the conflict escalate instead of resolving it too quickly. Real tension arises when characters delay decisions, stumble, fail and grow as a result. If you let conflicts fizzle out too quickly, tension is lost. In a scene, an inner contradiction or an unspoken resistance often achieves more than big words.<\/p><h2>The five types of conflict<\/h2><p>To keep your story alive and multi-layered, here are five forms of conflict that you can use in different ways:<\/p><ol><li><strong>Inner conflict<\/strong> \u2013 The struggle within: values, doubts, emotions. It is often more difficult to build up because it has to do without external opponents \u2013 but it is precisely the tension between self and desire that makes it powerful. <br \/><em>Example:<\/em> A character wants justice, but fears the price they pay for it.<\/li><li><strong>Interpersonal conflict<\/strong> \u2013 confrontations between characters: arguments, misunderstandings, power struggles. A betrayal can consist of several small conflicts: planning, decision, revelation \u2013 each stage increases the tension.<\/li><li><strong>Social conflict<\/strong> \u2013 values, norms, expectations of the community contradict the individual goal.<\/li><li><strong>Nature conflict<\/strong> \u2013 environmental influences, external forces, conditions that act against the characters.<\/li><li><strong>Supernatural conflict<\/strong> \u2013 fate, magic, higher powers, intangible powers.<\/li><\/ol><p>Sometimes several types of conflict intertwine \u2013 an internal conflict works in parallel with external obstacles. In addition, (moral) <strong>dilemmas<\/strong> are particularly powerful \u2013 every decision is painful and costs something.<\/p><h2>Dilemmas: Decisions with a price<\/h2><p>A dilemma is more than a conflict \u2013 <strong>it forces your character to choose between two evils<\/strong>. There are three conditions for a strong dilemma:<\/p><ul><li><strong>There is no perfect choice<\/strong> \u2013 every decision is fraught with loss, guilt, or risk.<\/li><li><strong>The decision changes the character<\/strong>, reveals his values or fears.<\/li><li><strong>The dilemma is emotionally charged<\/strong> \u2013 it&#8217;s about abstract decisions, relationships, morality or identity.<\/li><\/ul><p>Example: A character has to decide whether to tell the truth and lose a friend \u2013 or remain silent and betray himself. This decision shows not only action, but who this person is. <strong>Dilemmas are one of the best tools to create tension and push characters to their limits<\/strong>.<\/p><h2>Anger is good! \u2013 The power of repressed emotion<\/h2><p>Anger is an underestimated resource in stories \u2013 especially for female characters, it is often avoided or hidden. But <strong>anger is narrative gold:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>It is honest, raw and makes characters seem particularly vulnerable.<\/li><li>Anger <strong>can be a motivator<\/strong> \u2013 it drives action and change.<\/li><li>If it is used in a comprehensible way, anger does not seem unsympathetic, but <strong>human and credible<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Make your characters explode<\/strong> \u2013 especially if they have remained calm so far! This has a cathartic effect and shows inner conflict.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6bec4bc elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6bec4bc\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-9e09246\" data-id=\"9e09246\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fff5ead elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fff5ead\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Practical exercises<\/h2><p><strong>Exercise 1: The risky no<\/strong><\/p><p>Take a scene where your character would normally say &#8220;yes.&#8221; This time, force them to say &#8220;no&#8221; \u2013 and for a good, convincing reason. It is important to note that the decision must cost something.<\/p><p><strong>Exercise 2: Write yourself angry<\/strong><\/p><p>Imagine a situation in which your character has held back so far. Let them freak out this time. Feel what&#8217;s burning inside them \u2013 and bring it into the scene.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-8b96cfc elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"8b96cfc\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-530734c\" data-id=\"530734c\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-afaf86d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"afaf86d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Conclusion<\/h2><p><strong>Conflict is more than action<\/strong>: it is the heart and soul of your story. When you&#8217;re brave, letting characters experience real opposites and sending them through difficult decisions, you&#8217;re not just telling a story \u2013 you&#8217;re making them feel. Because no perfect figure is remembered.
