This book explains how pastoral care and counseling can be used therapeutically to help people in destress.
The demand for pastoral care and counselling has significantly increased in the current era. The 21st century has witnessed remarkable growth in various aspects, especially in technological advancements. However, it has also brought about increased pain and confusion. People are facing suffering and hardships on a daily basis due to political violence, displacement caused by civil wars, economic struggles, communal breakdown, femicide, and family issues.
The prevalence of unemployment, poverty, malnutrition, and diseases such as malaria, TB, HIV/AIDS, Ebola, and now Covid-19 has led to immense suffering worldwide. Many individuals have lost their lives, and more are at risk until a cure is discovered. People are grappling with numerous oppressive forces that result in pain, depression, mistrust, and hopelessness. Through pastoral care and counselling, the church can provide hope to those in distress and facing uncertainties. This form of therapy offers individuals a safe and non-judgmental space to discuss their problems, worries, and difficult emotions.

Excerpt from the Book
Pastoral care and Pastoral counselling
Pastoral care and pastoral counselling are words used interchangeably. One cannot carry out pastoral counselling without providing pastoral care. Pastoral caring involves the nurturing of the individual, and this involves pastoral counselling. The context of pastoral care and counselling is the community of faith; the goal is faith and spiritual development; and the method is the communication of gospel promises that are applied by the Holy Spirit.
Although pastoral care and counselling are intertwined, they need to be distinguished. A distinction helps to clarify the different focal functions of the activities and avoid confusion. The difference between the two is that whereas pastoral care refers to broad caring activities, pastoral counselling emphasises pastoral caring in the form of dialogue and communication to alleviate distress within the context of pastoral ministry. Pastoral care and counselling is located within the context of pastoral ministry.
Pastoral ministry is broader than pastoral care, so too is pastoral care broader than pastoral counselling. To attempt to reduce all pastoral care to counselling is to fail to recognize both the breadth of pastoral care as well as the distinctive nature of counselling.
