important and it has to be added that the Indian way of thinking perfectly fits to the custom of arranged marriages. As a result of the belief in a concept called dharma which says that every human soul is just a small part of the universal soul the Indians have an ego less differentiated than the people of our western society and do not hold individuality so dear as we do. Thus, while the individual is considered being marginal, the family matters all the more. Furthermore, you can add that history really proves that this way of getting married really works. When it worked for the last centuries, why should it not work for the upcoming ones, either? Nevertheless, some serious problems such as the dowry have to be solved in the future.
Concerning the western society arranged marriages will not work, as we believe in romance and true love. We want freedom of decision, equal treatment of men and women, flexibility and independence.
For us the arranged marriages taking place in India may seem strange, but our values and ways of living can just not be compared that easily.
