Excerpt from the Book

Her Influence

In 1878, she became the first female piano teacher of the newly founded Dr. Hoch’s Conservatory in Frankfurt. There, Clara taught until the year 1892. Especially in her later years, Clara Schumann taught piano from home. She did not only school her students, but the whole music business.

Her performance strategy had a great impact on the music. This included an excellent preparation and a clever schedule structure. Every occasion followed a certain dramaturgy and adjusted to the attention curve. More demanding pieces were played in the first part of the concert and lighter and more popular ones in the second part. In order to give each concert a certain rhythm, the duration, character, flavors, tempi and the keys of the pieces were matched.

She influenced mostly her students through a certain interpretative attitude, which was already referred to as "Werktreue"(= faithfulness) in the 19th century. The exact observance of all the signs on the musical text was the basis of every interpretation. That’s why precision was the most important thing in her class.
