Excerpt from the Book

In fact, most of the first mover companies have failed, because these companies cannot clearly see the development prospects, this is the main reason. The second disadvantage of the first mover is that if the newly established company has a good prospect, it is easy to be acquired or imitated by a mature company. For example, in China, bicycles are a favourite means of transportation. One company has launched a bicycle sharing business, which also received government support, because it will promote people's exercise and reduce pollution. But within a short period of time, this company went bankrupt, because both Alibaba and Tencent launched this business. These mature companies took advantage of a wide range of customer bases to grab the ideas of first mover companies, therefore the inability to quickly occupy the market has become a major drawback of the first movers. The first mover in an industry is undoubtedly the most pressured, because similar competing companies may choose to develop collaboratively to avoid the monopoly of the first mover. The first mover still has another shortcoming. If an enterprise wants to develop well, it needs to recognize its position in the market. But the forerunner is very special. There is no similar company in the market, so it cannot reasonably evaluate itself in the early stage, nor can it give itself reasonable planning goals based on its peers.
