Many factors contributed to the expansion of the English language since it came in the British Isles in the fifth century from Northern Europe. Of the most important factors besides colonial policy and the industrial revolution were emigration and later the fact that USA become the leading economic nation of the world (Yano 2011:28). Pilgrim Fathers’ emigration was one of the first successful emigrations to the New World that paved the road for others to follow, leading this way to the birth of American English, the variety of English that established the status of the English language as a global language especially after America ascended as the world’s largest economic power.
The British nation’s colonization expeditions spread all over the world, spreading the English language along with it. Britain joined colonial expeditions during the Elizabethan Age, after the Portuguese and the Spanish and then as an adversary of the Dutch in Asian territories and also the French in America, soon becoming however a colonial empire spanning all over the world (Schneider 2011: 153). Emigration to the New World began in the late 16th century when settlers first arrived to now known Virginia and then the Puritans also known as Pilgrim Fathers who arrived on the Mayflower and settled to the north of Plymouth, Massachusetts (Crystal 2003: 31). The primary goal of emigrations to the New World was trade, with East India Company acquiring a charter for the far eastern trade and exploitation in 1600 (Shneider 2011: 154).
