This essay shows the use of authentic materials in teaching grammar and vocabulary in a foreign language.

Learning the language solely through instruction became a stall method that offered no actual practice on what was learned, no lived experience in using the language and thus did not promote communication skills to the desired degree and also involved students that were not motivated enough.

This need led to changes in language teaching and to the Communicative Language Teaching approach which emphasizes language’s function as a communicative tool.

Objectives & Research Themes

This work examines the pedagogical implementation of authentic materials within the framework of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). It explores how these resources transition language instruction from a focus on static grammar rules to an interactive, real-world communicative process that enhances student motivation and proficiency.

  • Evolution from traditional language instruction to the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach.
  • Integration of authentic materials to foster cultural understanding and learner creativity.
  • Practical benefits of audiovisual and real-life objects for vocabulary acquisition.
  • Challenges related to teacher preparation, material selection, and lesson planning.
  • Strategies for simulating real-world scenarios to improve communicative competence.

Excerpt from the Book

The Use of Authentic Materials in Teaching Grammar and Vocabulary

Following the Situational Approach, the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach came to solve the issues of predicting language and not accounting for its originality and creativity by viewing language primarily as a tool for communication (Richards and Rodgers, 1986). English language teaching was traditionally associated with language proficiency exams and it was oriented toward acquiring the skills that would help students succeed in them (Hwang, 2005). Aiming for success in a structured exam with a specific curriculum confined teaching to the teaching of just the material intended to lead to this success.

Instruction was designed and carried out through rules and standard forms which would be repeated and studied through texts in the target language, however through globalization and increased mobility, the need for people’s communication became bigger and so language learning changed to accommodate this need (Richards and Rodgers, 1986). As the world’s scenery changed to a more globalized one, where the English language possesses the status of the global language, learning the English language turned to a communicative need rather than just an academic qualification (Macwan, 2015).
