The aim of the assignment is to discuss the importance of leadership in the context of strategic management. In order to achieve this goal, the term leader must be distinguished from manager as a modal goal. Furthermore it needs to be clarified the relationship between strategic management and leadership.

To be able to achieve these goals the theoretical foundations about leadership and strategic management must first be developed in the second and third chapter. This includes respectively the history and evolution and a definition of these terms. After the basic understanding was created, the role of leadership in strategic management will be discussed in the main unit. Chapter five provides a conclusion and a critical examination of the research findings.

In many industries and sectors are currently undergoing a shift from evolutionary change to increasingly disruptive change. In this process, existing offerings and services are fundamentally called into question and in some cases even become obsolete. With this development, companies are forced to completely realign their business activities and thus face a complex challenge.

Excerpt from the Book

2.3 Leader vs. Manager

The two terms “manager” and “leader” are often used synonymously. However, they are not identical. The role of management is to promote stability or enable the organization to function well. On the other hand is the role of leadership to promote adaptive or beneficial change (cf. Schermerhorn et al., 2002, p. 286).

According to Bennis, managers are concerned with doing things right and maintaining the status quo. The focus is on systems and structures. The task of the manager is the perfect organization of processes, planning and control. A manager as a leader leads analytically and objectively distanced (cf. Bennis, 1989, p. 7).

The leader, on the other hand, is focused on building up the employees sense of purpose and to formulate a common goal. Through this development, the employees are motivated and inspired to implement this vision. Especially in a faster changing environment, the human factor in leadership is becoming more and more important. Among other things, leaders focus on people, inspire trust in their employees, think long-term and in terms of the entire and with regard to the entire company, ask "what and why", challenge the status quo. In this understanding of leadership, people and feelings are in the foreground (cf. Bennis, 1989, p. 7). The most important differences are shown in table 2 (cf. Table 2).
