This study aim to contribute to a general understanding of chicken production systems and its challenges and provides baseline information for further studies, useful as secondary information, but also useful to create awareness for the owners by recognizing effects of constraints.

Research Objectives and Thematic Focus
The primary objective of this research is to assess the existing chicken production systems and identify the associated challenges within the Ambicho Gode kebele. The study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of traditional farming practices, socio-economic factors, and the constraints that hinder optimal poultry productivity in the region to inform future development strategies.
- Socio-economic significance of poultry production for smallholder farmers.
- Evaluation of existing poultry production systems in Ethiopia (traditional vs. modern).
- Analysis of key constraints: disease outbreaks, feed scarcity, and lack of veterinary support.
- Impact of market access and infrastructure on poultry profitability.
- Assessment of current housing and husbandry practices in local households.
Excerpt from the Book
2.1 Socio- Economic Importance of Poultry Production
The importance of village poultry in natural economy of developingcountries and its role in improving the national status and income of many small holder farmers and land less communities has been recognized by various scalars and rural development agencies in the last two decodes (kitaly, 1998). Also reported that village chickens are the on live stock found in some house hold and the main functions of chicken from farmers perspective is provision of meat and egg for home consumption. Moreover, chickens are also an important element in diversification of agricultural production and increased house hold resources through involvement of women. Women own manage, sell and receive money from chicken sales in most of households and also provide generating activities from sells of eggs and birds. Occasional consumptionprovides available source of proteins in the diet for small holder farmers in developing countries especially in low income food deficient countries (Aklilu,2007).
Family poultry represents one of the few opportunities for saving, investing and security against risk. In some of these countries family poultry accounts approximately 90% of the total poultry production (Bran ckaert, 1999). In expressing the contribution of village chicken keeping (Toddle and Alemu, 1997) indicated that in country like Ethiopia chicken keeping could have tremendous contribution to meet the animal protein requirement of the people. The precipitate egg and chicken consumption in Ethiopia was reported to be 57 egg and 2.8 kg of chicken meat perineum (Alemu, 1987).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the core focus of this research?
The research focuses on assessing traditional chicken production systems in the Ambicho Gode kebele, specifically looking at how households manage poultry and what challenges they face.
What are the primary themes discussed?
The paper covers the economic role of poultry for smallholders, different production systems in Ethiopia, and specific barriers like disease, poor feed, and market access.
What is the main research objective?
The objective is to identify the socio-economic importance of poultry, document constraints, and provide baseline information to help improve current production practices.
What methodology is employed?
The study utilizes both primary and secondary data, involving questionnaires, interviews, and group discussions with selected households, analyzed via descriptive statistics.
What does the main body cover?
The main body includes a literature review of poultry systems in Africa/Ethiopia, a detailed description of the study area, and a plan for how data will be collected and analyzed.
Which keywords define this work?
Key terms include poultry production, smallholder farmers, Ethiopia, scavenging systems, rural development, and poultry challenges.
Why is housing a critical issue for local poultry?
The research notes that lack of proper housing exposes poultry to nocturnal predators, significantly contributing to high mortality rates in smallholder systems.
How does the study address market constraints?
It highlights the lack of organized marketing systems and the impact of long distances to major markets, which prevents farmers from obtaining fair prices for their poultry products.
