Children grow up in different environments with different caregivers who can be parents or guardians. At times the caregivers could be working in jobs with low pay thereby feeling frustrated financially and stressed up. On severe occasions, the caregivers can indulge in alcohol and drug use to mitigate the stress level affecting them. In such a life, the parents/guardians end up neglecting their children or subjecting them to physical abuse. This needs assessment focuses on understanding the impacts of physical child abuse/neglect on the life of survivors in Rockford Community in Illinois.
The research will employ a qualitative approach to collect data among 315 participants. The method of data collection will entail semi-structured interviews read to the participants over the phone. Then, the data analysis will be done thematically by extracting keywords from the participant’s data and matching it with a theme that matches it.

Chapter Summaries
Repercussions of Childhood Abuse and Neglect for the Survivor: This chapter introduces the prevalence of child abuse and neglect in Rockford, Illinois, highlighting the stressors faced by low-income parents, such as financial pressures and substance abuse, that contribute to maltreatment. It notes the existing disparities in research attention given to physical abuse versus neglect, emphasizing the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the combined effects. The chapter sets the stage for the research by outlining the significance of studying the long-term consequences of both physical abuse and neglect on survivors' lives and exploring the lack of effective interventions.
Research Background: This section delves into the existing literature on child abuse and neglect, highlighting the under-researched nature of neglect compared to physical abuse. It discusses the observable consequences of neglect, such as juvenile delinquency and unstable relationships, while contrasting it with the more easily identifiable markers of physical abuse. The chapter examines the established definitions of child abuse and its documented physical and psychological repercussions, establishing a foundation for understanding the complex interplay between physical abuse and neglect. The chapter also investigates the causal relationships between parental relationships and child maltreatment, differentiating between the factors associated with physical abuse (lack of empathy) and neglect (poor relational models).
The Problem Statement: This chapter emphasizes the ongoing concern surrounding physical abuse and neglect as significant social issues. It reiterates the imbalance in research focusing primarily on physical abuse, neglecting the equally crucial impact of neglect. The chapter underscores the need for research that specifically addresses the combined challenges faced by children experiencing both forms of maltreatment, highlighting the gap in understanding the long-term effects and the lack of effective interventions to address these issues.
