This essay's intent is to track, find and analyse characteristics that shaped the American way of thinking or the society of the American culture or even the political panorama in the United States of America. However, this essay focuses on the Puritan roots from the 17th and 18th century that show an impact on the current society, politics and even in the economic system. It is important to examine these factors that shaped the national characters of the US which we can observe every day in the news, television, movies, music or in the citizens of the United States. But we do not know where this all originated. This paper takes a deeper insight on how the Puritan culture, that came to the United States over 300 years ago, shaped the American society.

Excerpt from the Book

Where did the Puritans leave tracks on the current American society?

Mrs. Kang put a strong emphasis on five selected topics that she considered as fundamental for her thesis, starting with the foundation the Puritans laid for the American Individualism. She starts, by claiming that Individualism is the core base of American values and is omnipresent in American culture. It places great value on self-reliance, on privacy, and on mutual respect. The Puritans had a similar attitude with this anti-authority approach which developed to a strong self-awareness. This originated with Martin Luther and his anti-pope attitude and his tenet. They destroyed the hierarchical church system and focused more on individual development. In addition, they believed in the “predestination” concept. This means, religious purity and salvation can be achieved through self-discipline, self-improvement and hard work. Secondly, she describes how the foundation of Democracy was laid by the Puritans. Almost one hundred years after the emigration from England to the colonies, the declaration of independence was written and after the War of Independence the state was divided into three branches: executive, legislative, and judicial. In 1620 for the first time in the colonies, a temporary government had to bridge the time and had the opportunity to self-govern the state, until England could draw an official government again. However, this concept of “self-government” spread through the country. Furthermore, the Puritans had no hierarchy in the church and were able to chose their own priests and they could manage all by themselves, this idea of managing things by themselves, helped to form the American democracy.
