Excerpt from the Book

3.4. Threats of Coachella’s tourism

First of all, it matters a lot to take a closer look at the threats caused by visitors. Tremendously important is to say that music festivals in connection with tourism have remarkable effects “(…) ranging from transportation emissions, fuel use, waste, energy intensity, and festival site damage.“74 And since the environment is more important than ever before, this aspect must be discussed first because of its importance. Researches estimate that smaller festivals than Coachella generate over 27,000 tons CO2 resulting from transportation, art installations and power generation. But if the attendees “(…) release CO2 at the same rate, it would be approximately 100,312 tons over the two festival weekends.“75 Additionally, people from all over the world travel by plane and celebrities even use private jets daily. In total festival participants are responsible for 65% of the local carbon footprint. In addition, it is also proven that larger music festivals exeed 110 decibels. As a result “(…) noise pollution can alter animal behaviors as they avoid noisy areas, which can disrupt ecosystems [as well as plant reproduction is affected].“76

The next aspect deals with waste. Crowds of 250,000 participants also consume a lot of food and beverages without really thinking of the waste they make and a total of 107 tons per day is an extremely shocking number77. Fact is that only 20% is recycled and as long as the festival grows in popularity, it will be hard to recycle more over time.78 In terms of energy, it is expected that
