Unlike adult’s literature which deals with all issues and themes of society, children’s literature is required to avoid the unpleasant topics such as racism, sexuality, cultural bias, and violence. Here, an important question emerges: do the literary works associated to children bear only one interpretation, or they may introduce a double-meaning message? Until the 1940s, it was easy to answer this question; however, the emergence of postmodernism as an iconoclastic, absurd, and hyper-real philosophy makes it difficult to categorize any literary work. For example, the poetic works of Shel Silverstein (1930-1999) may bear more than one interpretations: the first introduces simple and funny messages to children, whereas the second implies political and fragmented ideas through using word-play technique.

Excerpt from the Book

Illustrations are very important element in Children’s literature

Illustrations are very important element in Children’s literature as they must focus on the aspects of aesthetics and beauty. Moreover, they must avoid the negative pictorial elements such as nudity, violence, sexuality, and vandalism. In this regard, it is necessary to assert that the visual element in children’s literature is as necessary as the verbal element as it is the main gate that attracts the reader to the fascinating world of literature. The primary goal of illustration is to convey a message to readers or viewers. Some of the images are breathtaking, but their purpose is to expand on and clarify the meaning of the text. Illustrations are used in children's books to help children learn how to read. Illustrations have the power to transform a simple story into something thrilling and fascinating.
