The change from traditional teamwork, with team members facing each other face to face in a room, to virtual collaborations, with members working over distance and time, is a phenomenon often mentioned and extensively addressed in specialist literature.

More than 10 years ago, Deborah L. Duarte and Nancy Tennant Snyder noted that newly developed communication technologies at the time and increasing globalization, which radicalized networking among companies, created the basis for virtual teamwork.

More current works show that virtual teams have now become indispensable in almost every company. In 2013, for example, Sonja App even speaks of a revolution in the world of work, which, brought about by the newly emerged media, has created new forms of collaboration.

The structure of this paper entitled "Collaboration in virtual teams - a practical analysis" can be divided into three parts. It begins with two theoretical sections that form the basis for the practical analysis found in the third part.

Research Objectives and Key Topics

This work aims to analyze the mechanisms of collaboration in virtual teams, exploring how these teams function, their inherent benefits, and the significant challenges they face in a modern, digitized work environment. The study bridges theoretical frameworks with practical insights from industry examples to provide a comprehensive understanding of effective virtual leadership and cooperation.

  • The theoretical foundations and defining characteristics of virtual teams.
  • Key success factors for forming and leading virtual teams.
  • Challenges related to communication, culture, and technology in virtual settings.
  • Practical analysis of virtual teamwork at RedQuadrant Ltd and Microsoft Deutschland GmbH.

Excerpt from the Book

3.2.1 Challenges

Due to flat hierarchies, for example, the volume of communication in virtual teams is usually greater than that in traditional workgroups. In contrast to normal teams, the communication effort also increases due to the fact that, unless video conferences are used, only two team members can communicate with each other at the same time. Konradt and Hertel go one step further and note that the higher communication volume in virtual teams is "due to a restriction of communication channels".23

This means that if optical and acoustic channels are not present, as is the case for example, when virtual team members communicate via e-mail, the communication process is extended because all non-verbal information must be supplemented. BY non-verbal information that cannot be exchanged in such situations is meant, for example, facial expressions, gestures or intonation.24

In other cases, too, communication with modern media, both technically and socially, is more complicated than traditional communication. The lack of social presence, which has already been mentioned, is one of the most frequently mentioned problems. Another general problem area with computer-aided communication is a lack of communication of a common knowledge base. If there are unclear ideas among the team members about the work progress or the work context of the other members, misunderstandings may arise. These misunderstandings can be a hindrance to a successful continuation of the teamwork process.
