Gegründet wurde The Millennium Project im Jahr 1996 durch eine Initiative der Universität der Vereinten Nationen, dem American Council for the UN, der Smithsonian Institution und der Futures Group International. Maßgeblicher Ideengeber, Mitgründer und bis heute der Executive Director ist Jerome C. Glenn, welcher mich während des Praktikums als Supervisor betreute.
Der Gedanke hinter dem Projekt ist der Aufbau eines stetig wachsenden, globalen Netzwerkes, durch das Wissenschaftler, Politiker, Unternehmer und Forscher aus aller Welt Informationen und Lösungsansätze zur Lösung aktueller und zukünftiger Herausforderungen und Bedrohungen für die Menschheit sammeln, entwickeln und wirksam an die Öffentlichkeit kommunizieren können, um entsprechende Policies anzustoßen. Dazu wurden 15 Global Challenges identifiziert, die als maßgeblich für das 21. Jahrhundert angesehen werden können. Entsprechend der dezentralen Organisation gibt es inzwischen 69 sogenannte Nodes, bestehend aus lokalen Teams an Wissenschaftlern, Institutionen und politischen Organisationen, die ihr Wissen und ihre Ideen in die Datenbanken des Think Tanks einspeisen und im regen Austausch miteinander stehen.
