Excerpt from the Book

1.1 Juniors character traits and how he describes himself

In the book Junior describes himself as a hydrocephalic, he has water in his brain which makes him handicapped on a certain level. Besides having seizures regularly, he also suffers from stuttering and lisping. By saying “So obviously, I looked goofy on the outside, but it was the inside stuff that was the worst.” (Alexie & Forney, 2007) He describes not only his physical appearance but also his psychological wellbeing as unnormal. As the other kids tell him so on a daily basis (“Everybody on the rez calls me a retard about twice a day.” (p. 14) he starts to believe it himself and because they beat him up regularly he mostly stays inside to avoid being beaten up. Therefore, Junior definitely has the character trait of being introverted. He prefers solitude (“So I mostly hang out alone in my bedroom and read books and draw cartoons.” (p. 14). On the other hand, Junior also has a part of extroversion (“So I draw because I want to talk to the world. And I want the world to pay attention to me.” (p. 15)). Furthermore, he shows ambitious behavior as he really wants to be a famous artist through his drawings as it would enable him to escape the reservation (“So I draw because I feel it might be my only real chance to escape the reservation.” (p. 16).
