Excerpt from the Book

What does the word curriculum mean to you?

After a lengthy discussion on the topic "what is a curriculum" the PEH (Physical Education Head) responded by stating that:

A curriculum creates opportunities for students to achieve their goals through being taught how to appreciate wanting to learn, which challenges them academically to think critically, evaluate content within a global context and promote International Mindedness, leaving no child behind and making provision for all culturally minded students. The students work collaboratively within a group setting and through peer and self-assessment making connections with the "bigger picture" (H. Blake, Personal Communication, December 1, 2020).

According to Education Reform (2015), it can be defined: "The term curriculum refers to the lessons and academic content taught in a school or a specific course or program. In dictionaries, the curriculum is often defined as the courses offered by a school, but it is rarely used in such a general sense in schools" (p. 1).

As teachers, we assume a curriculum involves all the academic subjects being taught in a school. One can conclude that a curriculum caters to the specific needs of an individual student/s. It challenges them to achieve the best possible results, setting attainable targets for them to achieve.
