I will try to shine a light of the role of humor in African American culture in this paper. Regarding the everyday racism that minorities in general and African Americans in particular face in the United States to this day, it is no surprise to find African American comedians employ many tactics to either highlight, demask, ridicule, or turn the concept of racism upside down in their stand-up routines, TV shows, or movies.

The examination focuses on how Dave Chappelle managed to create joy and laughter from ridiculing racism and bigotry in his TV show "Chappelle's Show" during its three-season run from 2003 through 2006. The focus of my interest lies in how Chappelle and his co-writer Neal Brennan tackle racism in their TV show. I will examine two sketches from Chappelle's Show, namely, "Frontline – Clayton Bigsby", and "Jury Duty" to answer the question whether Chappelle and Brennan do live up to Pérez', Thomas', and Mintz' assessment of a comedian's role in the American society.

Excerpt from the Book

3 The Comedy of Dave Chappelle

Widely considered one of the greatest American standup acts of all time by both, critics and fellow comedians alike (cf. Powell 2006; Love 2017; Williams 2014; Hart 2013 as examples), and frequently voted into top positions in polls by numeral magazines and TV shows, Chappelle broke into the American comedy mainstream with his much beloved sketch comedy TV series Chappelle's Show, which aired on Comedy Central from 2003 through 2006. In line with Thomas' (2015:169) observation that "[t]he comic is centered as one of society's most valuable political actors, providing worldviews and social context interwoven with humor, making otherwise troubling material more palatable for mass audiences", Chappelle has tackled many social issues (drug abuse, poverty, racism/race relations, gender issues, police violence) in both, his TV show and his stand-up routines. As covering all the social ills Chappelle treats in his comedy would go beyond the scope of this paper, I will focus on the way Chappelle and his co-writer Neal Brennan tackle racism in their TV show Chappelle's Show. For this purpose, in the now following sections I will examine two selected sketches from Chappelle's Show.
