The Reassurance of Labeling
Defining gender is a challenging topic. In the following passage a short description of gender, sex / sexuality, transgender and demiboy will be given. Heidi M. Levitt introduces the term gender in her study “A Psychosocial Genealogy of LGBTQ+ Gender: An Empirically Based Theory of Gender and Gender Identity Cultures” as characteristics of cultural, psychological, or social form that is associated with the biological sex of a person. (276) Sedgwick and Butler claim in Salomon’s “Queer Theory” that having a gender identity is beyond choice and control. (3) The sex of an individual is defined by physical differences. Adding to that, sexuality determines whom you may be attracted to. (276) Transgender people live and embody the opposite sex as they were born as initially. Those people may or may not have gone under hormonal treatments and or operations to adjust their genitals. Moreover, if they have not gone through those surgeries they will most likely identify as trans, transman or transwomen and not as transsexual and transgender as stated by Judith Butler in her book Undoing Gender. (6) A demiboy or a demiguy is defined by the gender identity only being partly male whether the person was born with that sex and gender. (Martino et al. 759) As already mentioned in the introduction gender fluidity plays an immense role in today’s society. The broad spectrum of labels has been expanded over the years. Since there are so many new labels it is questionable if the traditional terms such as lesbian, gay, etc. are still appropriate for this population. (Porta et al. 82) Adapting the passage “I’ve been looking up a shit ton of terms, but every definition—every label—makes me feel more frustrated. There’re so many ways for a person to identify . . . So why doesn’t anything feel right for me?” from the novel shows the frustration of the diversity of labeling. (178) Nonetheless, new genders were formed because the restricted norms excluded certain people which made those feel unwanted.
