The thesis was written in the subject of business psychology and deals with the subject of self-enhancement as a construct and looks at the phenomenon for its advantages and disadvantages.

Die Arbeit wurde im Fach Wirtschaftspsychologie geschrieben und behandelt das Thema Selbsterhöhung als Konstrukt und betrachtet das Phänomen auf seine Vor- und Nachteile.

The concept of self-enhancement has engaged psychology for a long time. A deep change in perception thus provides a balance between truth and the ideal self-image. Therefore, there are active and passive expressions with this effect, which take different approaches. Various effects have to be taken into accounts, such as the better-than-average effect or the self-serving attributional bias.

Research Objectives and Core Themes

The primary objective of this paper is to explore the psychological concept of self-enhancement, analyzing its potential advantages, inherent risks, and its manifestations across different cultures and age groups to understand its role in self-esteem regulation.

  • The psychological mechanisms and hierarchy of self-presentation.
  • Positive and negative outcomes of self-enhancement in social and professional environments.
  • Cross-cultural variations and the early development of self-enhancement in children.
  • The connection between explanatory styles and long-term physical health.
  • The correlation between self-enhancement and narcissism.

Theory

One of the central laws of psychology and self-view is the compensation of negative emotions and the protection of self-esteem and self-perception. The deep-seated reasons for the desire for positive self-presentation lie in the striving for high self-esteem (Leary et al., 1995). If this is not confirmed by others, the perceived dissonance is removed by one's behavior. Thus, social recognition is the driving force behind positive self-esteem. Nevertheless, a meta-analysis found no evidence of reduced self-esteem through group exclusion (Blackhart et al., 2009). Aspects of behavior are chiefly done subconsciously. Alicke et al., (2009) define two forms of controlling complications with self-perception. Firstly the primary control, which aims for active and changing handling. And the secondary control, which adapts the perception of an event in a self-serving way.

Primary control is favorable but it cannot exist without the external aid of the secondary control, as the subconscious processes cause a decisive contribution. The way how we deal with interests is determined by the height within the hierarchy (Table 1).

Summary of Chapters

1. Abstract: Provides a concise overview of the psychological study of self-enhancement, noting its evolutionary utility, cultural universality, and its role as a component of narcissism.

2. Introduction: Traces the historical background of self-presentation research, identifying the need for balancing positive self-enhancement with realistic self-assessment in modern organizational contexts.

3. Theory: Explains the psychological mechanisms (primary and secondary control) behind self-enhancement, including specific biases like the better-than-average effect.

3.1 Thematic foundations: Discusses the hierarchical nature of human interests and the protective role of self-esteem in balancing negative emotional experiences.

3.2 Cultural Differences: Examines how Eastern and Western cultures differ in their overt expression of self-enhancement, while noting that the underlying psychological drive is universal.

3.3 Effect on children: Analyzes how unrealistic optimism and self-exaltation develop during childhood and persist throughout an individual's life.

3.4 Effect of Explainstyle: Investigates the long-term health implications of explanatory styles, using longitudinal data to correlate internal, stable, and global explanations with physical outcomes.

4. Discussion: Synthesizes findings on the benefits and risks of self-enhancement, suggesting practical applications for identifying and managing self-enhancing tendencies in the workplace.

5. Reference: Lists the academic citations and empirical studies used to support the theoretical arguments provided in the paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the core focus of this research paper?

The paper examines the phenomenon of self-enhancement, which is the psychological process by which individuals maintain or increase their self-esteem, exploring both its beneficial impacts and its potential for creating distorted self-perceptions.

What are the primary themes discussed in the work?

The central themes include psychological control mechanisms, manifestations of self-enhancement in childhood, cultural differences in self-presentation, and the influence of cognitive styles on long-term health.

What is the main objective or research question?

The paper seeks to determine whether self-enhancement should be viewed positively or negatively, asking what causes individuals to elevate their self-views and how these mechanisms affect organizational and social functioning.

Which scientific methods are employed in this study?

The author uses a literature-based synthesis approach, evaluating meta-analyses, psychological studies, and long-term longitudinal data (such as the study by Peterson et al., 1988) to derive conclusions.

What topics are covered in the main body?

The main body covers the theoretical mechanisms of primary and secondary control, the universality of self-enhancement across cultures, developmental evidence from child psychology, and the impact of personal explanatory styles on physical longevity.

Which keywords best characterize the work?

Key terms include self-enhancement, self-esteem, narcissism, cognitive bias, and explanatory style.

How does cultural background affect self-enhancement according to the paper?

The paper suggests that while cultural origin influences the outward expression of self-enhancement—with Eastern cultures focusing more on inner values compared to individualistic Western displays—the fundamental drive for self-enhancement exists independently of culture at an implicit level.

What does the study conclude about self-enhancement in children?

It concludes that self-exaltation and unrealistic optimism are present in early childhood, often more pronounced than in adults, as children lack extensive experience with failure, which serves as a developmental foundation for self-perception throughout life.

Are there specific risks associated with self-enhancement mentioned in the text?

Yes, the author highlights risks such as the potential for overestimating one's abilities, leading to missed opportunities for improvement, frequent disappointments due to setting unrealistic goals, and potential social backlash if self-presentation is perceived as arrogance.

What practical application does the author suggest for companies?

The author suggests that companies could use surveys to identify employees with self-enhancing tendencies and place them in roles where a positive first impression is beneficial, such as customer-facing positions, while being aware of the associated risks in managing such employees.
