Animism
Animism is a religious belief that all material objects in the known universe contain a soul. That includes all manner of living beings such as animals and plants, and also of inanimate objects like stones and water and sometimes even phenomenon are known to be vessels of spiritual energies. This philosophy encourages the believer to pay respect to the cosmic order, expressed through the presence of corporeal objects, which set reality in balance. The following line lifted in the third act is an exemplary description of how this concept is used:
“You have to appease them,” her grandmother said. “You have to apologize or you will die, and not even the saints can save you.”
Salamanca is a story about two people fighting for their love amidst a deeply superstitious rural town and a sprawling urban city. Thus the central theme of this novel is the “old faith versus the new faith.” This is quickly made apparent through the description of the two primary settings of the piece; Tagbaroan and Manila. The former used the animistic symbolism much more frequently while the latter has very little in the way of spiritual representations. In a way it illuminates the symbolism of Tagbaoran as the primary aspect of sacred imagery in the novel’s entirety.
