This study aimed to improve the performance level in Mathamatics of twenty-two Grade four pupils using Independent Workbook Learning Materials. A 20 items adopted test was used as the main instrument in the study. The data gathered were analysed and interpreted with the use of statistical tools and measures such as frequency count, percentage, mean, and t-test. Mathematics is a natural subject for hands-on kinesthetic learning experiences that appeal to the visual and auditory senses. Using independent materials is an important tool as an active process of student-centered learning.

Research Objectives and Key Topics

This action research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of utilizing Independent Workbook Learning Materials to improve the mathematics performance of Grade 4 pupils who showed insufficient mastery in specific geometric competencies.

  • Enhancement of mathematical performance levels via student-centered, independent learning tools.
  • Application of the K-12 curriculum learning competencies, specifically regarding angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals.
  • Utilization of home-based remedial instruction strategies to support learners during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Measurement of significant learning gains through pre-test and post-test statistical analysis.

Excerpt from the Book

IV- Proposed Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy

Teachers teaching mathematics have been faced with the inadequacy of K-12 ready materials. The development of learning materials that foster inquiry is an emphasis of curricular reform in K-12 math because inquiry has become a core element of education over the past few decades (Trumbull et al., 2005).Several studies on the development of instructional materials in science have been made in the Philippines. These studies focused on the development of modules in math (Auditor and Naval, 2014;), validation of workbook in science (Rubo, 2005), and module development for science investigatory project (Libranda, 2004).

With the issues on the scarcity of learning materials, teachers are challenged to develop appropriate instructional materials that may enhance student learning and may resolve the dilemma on the scarcity of reference materials. In response to the needs and concerns of science teachers, the independent workbook is developed by the researcher to facilitate more effective instruction in concretizing abstract concepts in science and to maximize the learning experience through the developed workbook.

Independent Workbook Learning materials pertain to the instructional resources used by learners to learn independently. The use of such materials helped them to become an active makers of learning by performing all the activities in the workbook. The use of this type of material is anchored in the theory of Bruner in his Discovery Learning Theory or Inquiry Method/ Theory of Instruction that posits that learning is more meaningful to learners when they have the opportunity to discover on their own the relationships among the concepts or to actively search for a solution to a problem. Using workbook gave pupils opportunity to interact with their environment by exploring and manipulating objects, wrestling with questions and controversies or performing experiments. It encouraged active engagement, promotes motivation, promotes responsibility and independence, develops creativity and tailors learning experiences. The idea is that students are more likely to remember concepts they discover on their own.

Summary of Chapters

III- CONTEXT AND RATIONALE: Discusses the importance of learner-centered education and the specific challenges faced by students and teachers in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic regarding instructional resources.

IV- Proposed Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy: Describes the development and theoretical grounding of independent workbook materials inspired by Bruner’s Discovery Learning Theory to fill the gap in available K-12 teaching resources.

V- ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS: Outlines the core research inquiry, specifically focusing on the measurable performance differences in mathematics before and after the workbook intervention.

VI- ACTION RESEARCH METHODS: Details the one-group pre-test/post-test research design and the selection of 22 Grade 4 pupils as the primary sample for the study.

VII- DISCUSSION OF RESULTS AND REFLECTIONS: Provides a statistical analysis of the pupils' performance, comparing baseline levels to results achieved after the intervention, confirming a significant improvement.

VIII – TIMETABLE /GANTT CHART: Outlines the chronological steps taken during the pre-implementation, implementation, and post-implementation phases of the research.

IX- PLANS FOR DISSEMINATION AND ADVOCACY: Presents the strategy for reporting findings and advocating for the use of the developed materials within the school district.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the core focus of this research project?

This research evaluates the effectiveness of independent workbook materials in improving the mathematical understanding and performance of Grade 4 students.

What are the primary themes addressed?

The work addresses the scarcity of instructional resources, the transition to home-based learning during the pandemic, and the enhancement of specific geometric competencies.

What is the main research objective?

The objective is to determine if using independent workbooks leads to a statistically significant increase in pupil performance compared to baseline levels.

Which, if any, scientific methodologies were deployed?

The researcher utilized a descriptive-developmental-evaluative research design, specifically a one-group pre-test/post-test methodology with t-test statistical analysis.

What does the main body of the work cover?

The main body covers the rationale behind independent learning, the methodology, the intervention development based on Bruner’s theory, and the presentation of empirical test results.

Which keywords categorize this work?

Key categories include Action Research, Mathematics Education, Geometry, Instructional Materials, and Learning Competencies.

How were the geometric competencies measured?

Competencies were measured using a 20-item adopted test focusing on identifying angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals, scored against DepEd performance standards.

What was the result of the t-test performed in the study?

The calculated t-value of 10.803 indicated a significant improvement in student performance, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis.

What do the recommendations suggest for future educators?

The author recommends that teachers continue creating intervention materials for challenged learners and that further validation research be conducted across other subjects.
