Excerpt from the Book

My description of literacy instruction as a child

When you are young and innocent without a care in the world, you soon realise the importance of being able to read and write and the importance of literacy within school especially in Elementary, Middle and Secondary. The author had enthusiastic teachers who were very patient, understanding and caring when he was a youngster. The author recalls the importance of the library as a form of entertainment and getting your reading books for the week to keep one distracted and learning so much from different cultures, countries and exploring the world.

In Elementary school, reflecting back to the author, a teacher, Mrs Pretorius, was kind, caring, supportive, and an avid reader. She encouraged them from a young age to read and extend their vocabulary, allowing us to explore the world through the lens of being inquirers, and asking valuable questions. She always encouraged them to learn a new word and make a sentence and share it with their peers. Reading in class was a regular practice and through doing this we were becoming more confident in realising we were not battling alone and that other students were going through the same emotions, understanding, conceptualization of understanding the English language with all the rules being applied in terms of grammar etc.

Using our imaginations to create stories became easier and writing them, especially during examination times. The author distinctly remembers the creative writing that was offered. As a child, the author enjoyed reading a variety of children's books and exploring English literature.
