Excerpt from the Book

Peculiarities of People Living with Physical Disabilities

Virtually all people talk about people living with disabilities and many persons sound as if they really understand their essential features. However, from this writer’s research, the truth of the matter may well be that people living with disabilities are more commonly talked about than understood at any appreciable depth. A person who was unable or limited in carrying out activities that he or she can do due to congenital or long term physical/mental disabilities, was identified as a people living with disabilities. Short term difficulties due to temporary conditions were excluded. This is corroborated byMonroe (1980) that, disabilities occur when a person is limited to activities of daily living, especially one with mobility, sight, communication and so on. Whereas, a person is considered normal when he or she can and does do most of his age group characteristically do, he is considered to be an average or a normal person (18). Based on Monroe’s point of view disabilities is a condition not an illness or diseases.
