Excerpt from the Book

A Different Take on Linda Chavez’s views on Latinx Culture

The Latine population does face racism in the U.S. An example of this would be how Latinx students are treated in schools and universities. In an article, “Being Brown on Campus; Racism and Social-Emotional Health of Latino Students” it-gives us a look into the experience of being Latine at school. This article is about a young Latino student named Joshua who earned AP credits and took honors courses during his 10Th-grade year. Joshua was developing anxiety because of the previous president and the media coverage of deportation. He had the fear of his parents being deported or being left alone in the U.S. This made him develop not just anxiety but Racism-Induced Traumatic stress. It is a psychological/physiological condition that impacts a person of color due to racism (Espinoza). This condition usually stems from a traumatic response to verbal threats of harm, racial microaggression, humiliation, shaming people of color, and witnessing incidents that affect people of color (Smith). These things can affect not just people but children that experience racism on or off campus. These students listened to their teachers say that they will not succeed because of their race. Other racial responses that induce traumatic stress can not only affect the students’ way of life but mental health.
