The main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with utilization of rehabilitation services among children with disabilities in the Amolatar District in Northern Uganda.

This was a community based cross-sectional descriptive study involving qualitative and quantitative method. The study employed structured questionnaire and KII to collect the data. Data will be analysed using SPSS version 23 and thematic content analysis for quantitative and qualitative data, respectively.

About 110 to 190 million adults encounter substantial difficulties in their daily lives. In order to reduce the number of people with disabilities (PWDs), the WHO Member States in 2014 endorsed global disability action plan 2014–2021 with the aim to remove barriers and improve access to health services; strengthen and extend rehabilitation and community-based rehabilitation.

Study Objectives and Scope

The primary aim of this research is to evaluate the prevalence of rehabilitation service utilization among children with disabilities in the Amolatar District and to identify the specific factors—including parental attitudes, socio-demographic influences, and facility-related barriers—that contribute to the current underutilization of these essential health services.

  • Prevalence of rehabilitation service access among disabled children in Amolatar.
  • Impact of parental awareness and socio-cultural factors on service uptake.
  • Facility-related challenges, including waiting times, accessibility, and service costs.
  • Evaluation of the relationship between health service quality and patient adherence.
  • Development of evidence-based strategies for policy makers to enhance rehabilitation program coverage.

Excerpt from the Book

2.1.2 Travelling Distance to the Clinic

The distance needed to travel to the health facility and the geographical accessibility can be a barrier to participation and the continuation of the services by patients/caregivers. Ease of travel can be a barrier if the patient finds it difficult to get means of getting to the facilities. Poor access to the facility increases economic expenses that affect compliance with the required prescribed services (Beardley, Wish, Fitzelle, O’craby and Arria, 2003).

Geographical location of the health facilities is a determinant of the access and use of the rehabilitative services by patient /caregiver of children with disability. For parent/caregivers who are employed, it is difficult to get time off to get the patient to facility due to frequency of visits. Studies indicate that the location of the health facility can determine the access and utilization of medical services. In a study in Ghana, (Tolhurst and Nyonator, 2006)found that distance travelled to health facilities, long waiting times and negative attitude of health care providers were major barriers to the access of health care services.
