The church's polity or governance is a branch of ecclesiology or study of the church that addresses the organizational structure and hierarchy of the church. Issues of Church governance appear in the first chapter of the book of Acts of Apostles, the first act recorded after the accession in the election of Mathias as one of the Twelve Apostles replacing Judas Iscariot (Acts 1:12-26). This assignment explains the historical development that led to the polity of the Anglican Church highlighting the denominational history and local history that have influenced its choice of polity, comparing and contrasting this polity with Biblical teaching on church governance, and the impact of Anglican Church polity on assimilation and involvement of church members.

Excerpt from the Book

The Episcopal Polity of the Anglican Church

The Anglican Church (the Church of England) is an Episcopal polity form of church governance that is hierarchical in structure with authority over a local Christian resting in a bishop. The Episcopal form of governance takes its name from the Greek word episcopos, meaning Bishop or overseer. It designates the form of church government where all major decisions are made by the bishop or archbishop over a given area. The authority throughout the Episcopal Church is conferred and shared-not over us but coming down, but among us and with us coming together.

Special features of the Anglican Church is Episcopal: beliefs in the holy orders of Bishops, Priests, and deacons; the Bible which is a supreme and authoritative word of God; Apostolic-the belief in the tradition passed down from the Apostles, Apostolic fathers, and Church fathers; are united by the doctrine spelled out in the Book of Common Prayers (1662 and all others endorsed by the Provincial synod); acknowledges the leadership and fellowship with the Archbishop of Canterbury; accepts the following instruments of unity (the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Primate meetings, the Lambeth conference, and Anglican Consultative Council). Anglican Church is also divided into provinces, dioceses, and parishes. Each province is autonomous but in fellowship with the other provinces and is not limited to national boundaries, each diocese is autonomous under a diocesan Bishop but in fellowship with the dioceses under the province and other dioceses, each parish is semi-autonomous but under the diocesan bishop. The congregation may vary from parish to parish but under a vicar/priest.
