Objectives and Thematic Focus

This paper examines the role of trauma in Sarah Kane’s play "Blasted", focusing specifically on how the protagonist Ian experiences, processes, and ultimately attempts to accept the traumatic events depicted in the narrative. By analyzing the interplay between Ian and the Soldier, the study explores the deconstruction of the self and the search for meaning in a chaotic, violent environment.

  • Psychological definitions of trauma and their application to dramatic narratives.
  • The symbolic representation of trauma through space and character interaction.
  • Confrontation with past atrocities and the resulting psychological disintegration.
  • The role of forgiveness and human connection in processing trauma.
  • The intersection of personal growth and violent self-discovery.

Excerpt from the Book

The Expression of Trauma

In his discussion on the impact of trauma, Koh states that an individual who experienced a less traumatic event and has the mental capacity to face it may be able to process it by analyzing how the events and the ensuing feelings affect them. If an individual, however, is unable to face and process a traumatic experience due to the event’s severity or a lack of mental energy, their “mind automatically wraps [the experience] up and hides it out of consciousness” (Koh 5) leading to a suppression of the memories and feelings attached to it. This suppression serves as a coping mechanism for the individual.

Consequently, the individual would detach themselves from the experienced harm to not confront the complex negative emotions that are generated by their subjective perception of painful memories. This suppression, also called encapsulation, becomes less potent if the individual is confronted with certain circumstances, objects, people, or sensations that remind them of the repressed experience, triggering an overwhelming emotional response, e.g., a panic attack (Koh 5-6). If a trigger not only succeeds in reminding the individual of a repressed experience but also in unraveling it in the traumatized mind, the individual may be confronted with flashbacks, anxiety, and restlessness.
