South Indian Literature is vast and complex, and to cover every language and theme is a herculean task, beyond the scope of this academic research project. The focus shall be on Sangam literature; however, most of Sangam literature has been lost to natural disasters and time, there is a dearth of substantial research material on its development during the time of one particular dynasty. Hence, in this project we shall stick to Sangam literature and its development under the Pandyas, the establishers of Sangam culture, and the Cholas, the patrons to its development. The ultimate aim of this research paper is to explore the historical relevance of Sangam literature.

1.1. Literature and History
Words transcend time and space. Words transcend boundaries, and hence knowledge transcends boundaries for it is only with the bricks called words that we can build the castle of knowledge. And this knowledge that I talk about, is not limited to only facts, to only concepts, to only theories but it also has experiences of life and love, experiences of a society and fragile thoughts in its ambit. Knowledge is all that we see, taste, hear, sense, and feel. It is this knowledge that when put onto paper is called literature. The word ‘literature’ has its roots in the Latin word ‘littera’, which literally means ‘knowledge of books’. To say it in a single sentence, literature is the reflection of a society’s knowledge.
One might correctly ask why literature is important in history. The answer lies in the very source that we receive our historical facts from. Books, documents, records, journals, these are all literature; that literature which builds the very foundation of History. Life of a society that existed ages ago is best reflected through the literature of that society. Excavations might deliver to us magnificent artifacts, but the true value and significance of that artifact can only be known through the written records of the people, through the stories, the myths, and the legends.
Talking about literature, many argue that non-fiction is the best record. I argue otherwise. Non-fictional literature is the best record of facts and filtered ideas alone. The true mind of people can only be experienced through the stories they weave. Thoughts, apprehensions, customs, daily life, philosophy, social norms, contemporary issues are best expressed in stories, even if it be a fantastical story, because even fantasies are a shadow of imagination.
