These demographic changes reflect the national trend, where the size of older adults is expected to be 94.7 million by 2060 from 56.0 million in 2020. Senior citizens are poised to become even more racially and ethnically diverse. Although older adults in Illinois reside in urban areas, rural communities face significant financial and health problems. Estimates show that 8.6% of adults aged 65+ years live below the poverty level in Illinois. 17.8% of African American and 13.5% of Hispanic older adults within the same age group live in poverty.
Yet, only a fraction of older adults receives food benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. As the nation grapples with post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery, Embrace with Love presents the last mile connecting vulnerable senior citizens with food safety nets. Our goal is to support hard-hit households of the most vulnerable in our community. The pandemic is expected to worsen pre-existing inequalities among minority groups, especially Black, Hispanic, and Rural communities. A knock on the door might be bothersome to many of us, but to a homebound senior citizen, it could offer a glimmer of hope and joy. We honor our senior citizens with efficient, timely, free, and convenient food aid deliveries at their doorsteps. The inability to afford fresh fruits or drive to the grocery shop or food bank should never prevent the elderly from eating healthy diets.
