Excerpt from the Book

Religion and the United States of America

Religion, especially Christianity, has always played a large role in the United States. Even the founders of the United States believed, that the government could only succeed, if it decisions were based in religion and morality. James Madison and Thomas Jefferson tried to prove, that a state could function without an established state religion. It is for this reason, that the constitution is also not trying to secure freedom from, but rather for religion, establishing secularization. But today, Thomas Jefferson, as an atheist who strongly believed in the separation of church and state, would probably not be elected as president of the United States.

Secularization can be categorized as not only a historical, but also a social process. This process consists, as Durkheim, Weber an Marx already suggested, of the decline of religion, especially the belonging beliefs and practices, in the modern society. Additionally, the privatization of religion and the emancipation of state, science and economy also belong to this process. Secularization has worked quite well for the United States for about 200 years.

Its degree is measured by the level of religious diversity and state religious favoritism, such as state funding of religion. The United States have a legal separation of church and state and reports very low levels of religious regulation and favoritism.
