Excerpt from the Book

Impact of Sex Education among High School Students in Saudi Arabia

In many cultures worldwide, sex has been regarded as one of the most critical elements of life. While most cultures regard it as sacred, its approach and perception trends vary from region to region. However, most cultures agree that sex should be meant for adults and that only married people are culturally and religiously allowed to engage in sex (Alquaiz et al., 2013). The Saudi Arabian culture, being composed of mainly Islamic people, remains one of the cultures that approach the matters of sexual activities with utmost dignity and sacredness as outlined in the Islamic religious teachings (Daun & Arjmand, 2018). However, this does not dispute the fact that young adults and children engage in sexual activities. The adolescent stage has turned out to be one of the most challenging stages of development in a child’s life. Children exhibit increased urges and vulnerability to engage in sexual activities during this stage. The most devastating fact is that sexual practice among children continues to grow in popularity, especially among high school students in Saudi Arabia.

To counter the damaging effect it has on young children; it becomes important that high school students, who are the most vulnerable group, get educated on sexual matters. This report explores the need and impact of introducing sex education curricula in high school institutions as a key strategy to limit the irresponsible sexual behaviors that continue to corrupt and destroy the future of young people. A study conducted by Horanieh et al. (2021) reveals some of the damaging effects lack of sexual education has on children, such as the increased spread of sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies, justifying the need to introduce sex education in schools. Sex education will promote the aspect of individual responsibility and self -consciousness among children, which is the most vital strategy in controlling sexual behaviors
