Excerpt from the Book

Moorish architecture

Moorish architecture mainly refers to the people and culture of Islamic nations that dominated the Iberian Peninsula. The Moorish period played a huge role in developing architecture and science in Spain. In the construction of Islamic structures, there was the use of wood, decorative tiles, and stucco, which was done regardless of the size and importance of the building. Ornaments were used to decorate the inside and outside(Kalmar,2001). Surface decorations or arabesques were made using detailed patterns and were the same with geometric [patterns, religious texts, and stylized flowers. Motif flowers and figures of vegetables are depicted with styles, and this kind of Islamic architecture is more emotional and has a strong mathematical background. The arches were the most constructive form of architecture and were made for decorations rather than other functions like structure. The Islamic architecture was made to show heaven on earth, and they showed how much religion played a huge role in spreading Islamic design in Spain(Rogozen-Soltar,2007). The architecture also focused on water, valued by Islam, who came from deserts; it was also an abundant resource when showing heaven on earth or the land promised by the Koran. The architectural designs, therefore, had fountains in the gardens and even running water canals.
