Book Excerpt

2. The responsible tourism initiatives at the V&A Waterfront

In this paper, the V&A Waterfront, a 123-hectare neighborhood in Cape Town consisting of a variety of restaurants, hotels, retail outlets and museums (Capetown.travel 2022), is presented as an example of a place in South Africa that follows responsible tourism initiatives. The quarter is located in South Africa's oldest functioning harbour and is one of Africa's most visited destinations, with more than 24 million visitors a year (ibid.). In general, the V&A Waterfront identifies its role as being at the frontline of sustainability and driving positive social and economic change (V&A Waterfront 2022a). Due to its many efforts and initiatives to promote responsible tourism and protect the environment, the V&A Waterfront has received several awards (see Appendix B) in the last few years (V&A Waterfront 2022b).

Most recently, the V&A Waterfront won the first place in the highly competitive World Responsible Tourism Awards (V&A Waterfront 2022c). These Awards, which were first presented in 2004, reward businesses and destinations that are contributing to a more sustainable and responsible tourism industry (Goodwin 2018).
