In this essay, the author explores how the results of the 1948 Palestine War (Arab-Israeli War) are reflected in Palestinian history and discusses how the narratives have influenced the reconstruction of the Palestinian national identity since 1948.

Even though for many the Palestinians have disappeared from the political map as an independent actor and even as a people during this period, it is quite obvious, which significance the events in 1948 had on the formation of a Palestinian identity (Khalidi, 2009). In the following, I will explain how the results of this war are reflected in Palestinian history and discuss how the narratives have influenced the reconstruction of the Palestinian national identity since 1948. However, before doing so, I would like to point out some important aspects, that should be considered in a discourse on national identities.

Excerpt from the Book

Impact of the 1948 War on Palestinian Identity

Another challenge is the factor, that the Palestinians must rely on other narratives, because there is no independent Palestinian history (narrative overlap) (Nassar, 2002).

Nevertheless, some analysis can be made about the impact of the 1948 war on the rebuilding of Palestinian identity: It is clear, that the Nakba created the moment in history when the Palestinian world order changed dramatically (Zelkovitz, 2017). The overwhelming majority of Palestinian Arabs had been expelled and became refugees. The society the Palestinians had composed over the centuries collapsed (Nassar, 2002; Zelkovitz, 2017). On an individual level, the war meant the loss of homes and property; on a collective level, it meant that Palestinians had to go into exile or live under the rule of a foreign military (Ibish, 2018). As a result, the Arab Palestinians faced a sense of loss of sovereignty. One saw oneself as a "passive object who has become the victim of a reality dictated by the "Other"" (Zelkovitz, 2017, p.129). In order to cope with and endure these consequences of war, the Palestinian Arabs developed a discourse of victimhood (Zelkovitz, 2017). Victimhood can be defined as "a state of mind in which the individual perceives himself as a victim" (Zelkovitz, 2017, p.132). This feeling among the Palestinians leads to the Palestinians divesting responsibility. This in turn leads to the emergence of a culture of denial, and it becomes almost impossible to develop self-criticism. Until today Palestinians continue to draw on this sense of victimization daily (Zelkovitz, 2017). For example, old keys are an important symbol of the right of return, kept as a memento by many Palestinians who left their homes in 1948 (Khalidi, 2009; Morris, 2004).
