Drug misuse among youths creates harm to social and biological lifestyles, yet affects legitimate economic activities in society. In spite of the fact that poly-drug use and illegal use of drug is a crime, many youths still indulged in it due to the merriment moment they derive from it. In the light of these, some selected youth in Ede, Osun State made it known to the researcher that they consume drugs to reason well or meditate and to eliminate phobia. Not only that, but illicit drugs use among youths has ravaged Nigeria.
The social and biological implications of drugs prevailing in the area and especially the knowledge and attitude to drug usage, the types of drugs being consumed, drug use pattern and evolving risk behaviour and factors influencing the usage of drugs among youth, thus seem worth of exploration. It is on this basis that this study examined the social and biological implication of drug usage among youths in Ede, Osun State.
A questionnaire was the main instrument adopted to collect data for the study. A multistage sampling technique was adopted to reach the respondents as a result of which 200 residents of Ede at these selected communities: Orita fogo, Sagba joint, Abogunde Joint, Orita Akala, Atapara joint, Sabo agbongbe, Oke Obada joint, Owode-Ede joint, Laoye joint, Agate, Joint and Isibo Joint in Osun State were involved in the study. At the end of data collection, 200 copies of the questionnaire were retrieved and treated for data analysis. The data generated were analysed and interpreted with the aid of tabular distribution of respondents and simple frequency with percentage.

Research Objectives and Themes
The primary aim of this study is to examine the social and biological implications of drug usage among the youth population in Ede, Osun State. The research seeks to identify the patterns of drug consumption, the common types of drugs abused, and the factors that influence youth to engage in such behavior while documenting the resultant societal and physiological consequences.
- Knowledge and attitudes toward drug usage among youth.
- Types of drugs commonly consumed and usage patterns.
- Evolving risk behaviors associated with drug abuse.
- Sociological determinants and biological impact of substance misuse.
- Strategies for management and preventative policy recommendations.
Excerpt from the Book
(i) Biological Factors in Drug Use: There are biological mechanisms responsible for humans’ variety of sensations in the brain inclusive of pleasurable sensations. Studies found humans’ brain to have a natural “pleasure pathway” that mediates the experience of reward. It is through the activation of this pleasure pathway that an individual experience a pleasurable sensations or feelings. (Barlow, Durand., 2009; Kelley & Berridge 2002) Therefore, the consumption of illicit drugs activates this pleasure pathway and consequently produces the pleasurable experience.
Though the exact location of the pleasure pathway in the brain is yet to be identified, it is definite that everyone has this pathway (Barlow and Durand, 2009), contributing to the fact that every human being has the inclination to be addicted and dependent on drugs. However, the chances of getting addicted (predisposition) are not the same for each individual.
In sum, due to biological factors, though the mechanism of activation in the pleasure path is the same, the degree of activation is not the same for different individuals, contributing to different individual’s predisposition to drug abuse. Research shows genetic factors to influence how people experience certain substances. In order to find out the genetic factors in drug abuse or addiction, many studies had been carried out to compare individuals with and without a family history of substance abuse. Upon reviewing several studies investigating alcoholism from the biological perspective.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the primary objective of this research?
The study aims to examine the social and biological implications of drug usage among youth in Ede, Osun State, seeking to understand the root causes and effects of substance abuse in that specific region.
Which theoretical frameworks are applied in this work?
The research utilizes Social Learning Theory, Self-Control Theory, and Strain Theory to explain the etiology of drug abuse behavior.
What is the methodology used for this research?
The study employs an exploratory research design using quantitative methods, specifically questionnaires distributed to 200 residents in selected 'hotspots' of drug consumption in Ede.
How is drug abuse defined in this paper?
It is defined as the excessive and persistent self-administration of a substance, or its misuse, leading to the impairment of social, psychological, or physiological functioning.
What are the major thematic fields covered?
The work covers knowledge and attitude toward drugs, types of drugs used, usage patterns, risk behaviors, sociological and biological impacts, and prevention frameworks.
Which keywords define this study?
Key terms include youth, addiction, substance use disorder, Ede, social and biological implications, and drug prevention strategies.
How do biological factors contribute to drug abuse?
The research explains that humans have a natural "pleasure pathway" in the brain; illicit drugs act as accelerators of this pathway, which can lead to individual predisposition for addiction.
What role does the family play in drug prevention?
The study recommends that parents model positive behavior and develop strong emotional ties with their children to reduce the likelihood of substance dependency.
What did the results reveal about student involvement in Ede?
