This study evaluated the level of competency of third- and fourth-year Filipino nursing students who had their clinical exposure at a tertiary government medical center. A descriptive cross-sectional research design was used. The respondents were 32 nursing students who had been exposed to the clinical setting, and 28 staff nurses from the delivery room and medical ward. The main instrument used was the survey questionnaire adopting the components of the Professional Regulation Commission - Board of Nursing (PRC-BON) National Nursing Core Competency Standards to assess the nursing students’ competencies. In order to ensure the validity and accuracy of the result, a simple percentage was used to determine the profile of the respondents; weighted mean and t-test were used in order to assess the level of nursing students' competencies. The majority of the respondents were in the age bracket of 20-25 years old, mostly females, and mostly assigned to the delivery room.

Objectives and Research Themes
This study aims to assess the competency levels of third- and fourth-year nursing students as perceived by both students and staff nurses at a tertiary government medical center. The research focuses on identifying potential gaps in clinical performance to improve future nursing education and practice standards.
- Assessment of nursing competency across eleven core professional standards.
- Evaluation of perceptions regarding clinical preparedness from nursing students and staff nurses.
- Examination of the relationship between respondent profiles and perceived competency levels.
- Development of a proposed action plan to enhance nursing student skills in clinical environments.
Excerpt from the Book
Rationale
Clinical experience is a crucial part of nursing education. Students take part in supervised learning sessions in actual healthcare settings, giving them the chance to apply what they have learned in the classroom. Preceptors who are experienced practitioners and educators who encourage students' critical thinking and clinical abilities in a secure environment, monitor clinical learning as it occurs in several settings along the health care continuum. Clinical rotations may be conducted in a variety of healthcare facilities, including medical centers, community hospitals, and nonprofit clinics. The variety of settings helps to prepare students to interact appropriately and effectively with patients from all walks of life (Albrecht et al., 2022).
A fundamental skill necessary for carrying out nursing duties is nursing competency. As a result, it's critical to define nursing competency precisely to establish the foundation for the nursing education curriculum. Nursing competency is the ability to accomplish one's duties while integrating a variety of factors, such as information, procedures, attitude, thinking ability, and values that are necessary in particular circumstances.

Which specific areas of nursing competency are evaluated?
The research evaluates eleven categories, including safe and quality nursing care, communication, collaboration, health education, legal and ethico-moral responsibilities, management of resources, and research.
What methodology was employed by the researchers?
The study utilized a descriptive cross-sectional research design, employing survey questionnaires based on the PRC-BON National Nursing Core Competency Standards (NNCCS).
Who participated in the survey?
Participants included 32 nursing students who had clinical exposure and 28 staff nurses assigned to the delivery room and medical ward at the Cebu South Medical Center.
What main theoretical frameworks underpin this study?
The study is anchored on Miller’s Pyramid of Clinical Competence and Dr. Patricia Benner’s Levels of Expertise Theory.
Were significant differences found in the perceptions of students and staff?
No, the study concluded that there is no significant mean difference in the level of competencies as perceived by the two groups of respondents.
How does the pandemic affect the findings of this research?
The researchers note that the transition from online learning to face-to-face hospital settings during the pandemic has created unique challenges and anxieties for nursing students regarding their performance.
What is the recommended action plan based on the study findings?
