Excerpt from the Book

1.1 Business idea

Nowadays, the detrimental effects of sedentary behavior and physical inactivity on office workers’ physical and mental health are ubiquitous. For this reason, it is not only in the organization’s interest but also its responsibility to counteract its workers’ lack of movement (Pronk, 2021) which is even considered a global public health issue by the World Health Organization (Vendramin et al., 2016). But how can enterprises achieve this goal?

While it is generally well-known that an active lifestyle does not only entail a decline of diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases, obesity and osteoporosis, but also ameliorated brain performance (Ratey, 2008), dancing in particular can contribute to the recommendation for adults to be moderately to highly physically active for 30 minutes on five days a week. Besides building muscular strength, endurance and flexibility, dancing challenges one’s mind (Toscano et al., 2014) which results in the fact that dancing even reduces the risk of suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease later in life (Verghese et al., 2003). Specifically, the popular dance activity Zumba which is characterized by Latin American beats and dance moves is one of the world’s most rapidly expanding fitness trends. Zumba provides an enjoyable, stimulating full-body group workout and supports the preservation of a healthy cardiovascular respiratory system (Toscano et al., 2014). Furthermore, the study of Vendramin et al. (2016) indicates that Zumba fitness as an effective way of exercising that boosts aerobic capacities can decrease body weight thus counteracting the issue of obesity. In addition to the mentioned physical benefits, Zumba with its energetic Latin music has been proven to enhance the living quality including psychological and social factors from which both individual employees as well as the whole business benefit (Vendramin et al., 2016; Pronk, 2021).
