The primary goal of this paper is to conduct a comparative analysis of Peter Woodward's and John Markakis' work on the crises occurring in the Horn of Africa in the twenty-first century.

The Horn of Africa has been an important and one of the world's most complicated and conflict-ridden regions in the world. In due course, it is critical to conduct a comparative analysis to demonstrate the extent to which they have contributed to the understanding of crises occurring in the Horn of Africa in the twenty-first century. As a result, they attempted to assess the main causes of class conflict in the Horn of Africa, as well as the Horn of Africa's main political situation. In this regard, a comparative analysis of the work of these scholars is imperative.

3. Critical Analysis of Works

Concerning the primary causes of conflict in the Horn of Africa Woodward and Markakis both argued almost the same points. According to Woodward, the current conflicts in the Horn of Africa have their roots in the European colonial experience in the region. As a result, incorrect borders agreed upon by colonial powers largely ignored the natural lines of ethnic, cultural, historical, and religious groups. Colonialism also disturbed the political, social, and economic lives of pastoral societies. This has resulted in intra-state conflicts and governments of newly independent states making territorial claims, which has resulted in conflict with other states.

Markakis also addressed the reasons for conflict in the Horn of Africa, emphasizing that colonialism is the root of the problem. According to Markakis colonial powers separated Somalia into five distinct regions. Somalia spent the majority of its resources after gaining independence in 1960 regaining lost territory. This resulted in hostilities with states in the Horn of Africa, particularly with Ethiopia.

Contrary to the aforementioned, other scholars elucidated dissimilar reasons for the main conflicts in the Horn of Africa as, for whatever type of conflict, the Couse is the state. However, I argue that in this multi-ethnic and complex region, the state is not the only maker and unmaker of conflict. Nature and society, for example, may serve as the foundation for conflict.
