2.3 Reactions of Nigerian Electorates to Social Media Messages on Continuous Voters Registration in Nigeria
The public in the context of social-mediated and computer-mediated studies or domain include the social media users or audience members that participate in online conversation on issues like the continuous voters registration. In spite of this generic classification, the network gate keeping researchers have made a distinction between two types of social media users, elite and non-elite users. The elite social media user occurs when an individual’s idea and opinions are crowdsourcing to prominence or the user holds some power outside of the internet, while non-elite users are largely unnoticed by the rest of a site’s users. In respect to the continuous voter’s registration, reactions came from both the elite and non-elite users.
The response of the public to the continuous voter’s registration was unprecedented and alarming, and the social media is awash with news of the response to the public to the exercise. Many attributed the massive response to social media campaigns. This scenario made social media users to engage in conversations, posting comments and sharing news items curated contents from mainstream media about the situation. So, the reactions of the public were hinged on the type of content shared and tone of conversations used in engaging in the conversation and commentaries. Social networking linked individuals together as a part of a voluntary group, and these individuals joined social media group conversation because they share common interest, causes, attributes and activities in respect to the continuous voter registration exercise. This group interaction enabled users to exchange information and opinions based on the exercise and their tone of conversation influenced the opinion of other similar groups or their significant others and influenced many people to want to join the rush to get their voters cards and to register as well.
