The goal of this written paper is to show managers how they need to change their leadership style due to working in a home office, how they can prepare for it, and what skills are required for this. How does or must leadership change because of the work in the home office? What new style of leadership does this entail? And how can managers adapt to the new change?

Due to the current fourth industrial revolution, digitalization is not only changing the way we live but also the way we work, thus having a decisive impact on the growth as well as the innovative power of companies and organizations. Many companies are undergoing a digital transformation in response to this change. Mobile working in itself has been an integral part of the working world for several years now. Open-plan offices are already a thing of the past in many companies, and fixed workstations are no longer assigned. For employees, this is accompanied by the loss of collegial as well as personal relationships. Managers are also faced with the challenge of not only managing their teams virtually, but also driving digital change processes within the company.

At the beginning of this assignment, we will first take a closer look at the term leadership in order to provide a basic understanding, followed by digital leadership and a brief explanation of the home office in the next chapter. In the next chapter, the question of how leadership must change as a result of work in the home office is explained. It also looks at how exactly managers can prepare for this and what qualifications and characteristics are needed for this new style of leadership in order to adapt optimally to the new change. The entire topic is then made clear by means of an independently selected example. The last two chapters then provide an outlook on the future of the home office, as well as a conclusion and a critical appraisal.

Excerpt from the Book

5. How must Leadership change because of the Work in the Home Office?

Leadership plays a central role in realizing the potential of the new world of work. However, digital companies need a different kind of leadership, namely more cooperation, understanding, coordination, involvement, and more collaborative leadership. For digital leaders, the greatest challenge is therefore to relinquish control while retaining leadership. But how can the performance of employees be controlled in a goal-oriented manner in such a new understanding of leadership? In the future, managers will also be responsible for implementing strategies and achieving the goals derived from them. This requires responsiveness and flexibility. It is essential to continuously adapt to the constant changes in day-to-day business as well as to achieve the strategic goals. In digital companies, however, with redistributed decision-making. The overarching corporate goals must be broken down into the company's own departmental and team goals so that employees are empowered to independently recognize and develop their contribution to achieving the goals. The clearer the mission, the easier it is to delegate it to an employee. A typical challenge in the digital world of work is therefore how employees are to be clearly guided in the face of unclear situations and continuously adjusted goals. Managers are needed who accompany and develop employees and take them along in the change processes. In the future, leaders will be in greater demand as catalysts, inspirers, and coaches. It is therefore no longer a question of management vs. leadership, but increasingly of the next step, leader vs. coach. Leaders continue to play a central role in providing the necessary support for the high speed in the company and the people moving within it. Accordingly, managers should not lead in an authoritarian manner but in a participative manner with the active involvement of employees. In times of digital transformation, employees want to get involved themselves, be given responsibility and freedom. However, this requires a modern leadership approach that is based on trust between the manager and the employee and relies on cooperation instead of top-down.
