This paper deals with the topic of Metaverse. The aim of this work was to identify and evaluate the possible opportunities and risks of a new digital world. For this purpose, all necessary technical terms are explained in the first part and then pros and cons are presented from different perspectives.
For more than three decades, Internet gives distinction to society. Ever since, there can be observed a digital evolution as a result of technological progress. Initially, the users of the first period of Internet, the Web1, were limited to access the information provided via websites. The interactivity between users and data sets was rendered possible for the first time after the transition to Web2. Consequently, people were enabled to create and share their own content through social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Now, the sector is about to take a step forward and develop a Web3 which envisions a decentralizing structure. In other words, this network aims to shift the control and power from the mentioned platforms on to their users. The Metaverse is a concept that bases upon this current transformation of the Internet. It is a matter of the expansion of presently existing possibilities prevailing in the web 3.
In an age in which the Earth has to cope with more dangers than ever, every investment that is made for future developments becomes more important and gains influence on the destiny of terrestrial life. While climate change poses a perilous threat to the planet, diseases and famines are only additional challenges the human race constantly faces all over the world. After the announcement on the part of Elon Musk in terms of a possible donation to the amount of 6 million dollars for countervailing worldwide hunger, the impact of this sort of contribution has come into consideration. Due to the fact that Elon Musk is only one of numerous entrepreneurs with a grand financial force, the question arising is whether investing in technological progress
is more expedient than investing in climate protection which will be examined by means of this paper.

Objectives and Core Themes
This paper aims to critically examine the Metaverse as a transformative digital evolution, contrasting its technological promises with the urgent real-world challenges facing society. It explores the viability of virtual spaces compared to tangible human needs by analyzing perspectives from both commercial vendors and individual users.
- The technological groundwork and terminology of the Metaverse
- The vision of an "embodied internet" championed by Meta
- Evaluating the Metaverse from the perspective of vendors and users
- Potential benefits vs. risks regarding social impact, addiction, and data privacy
- The feasibility of realization and the environmental footprint of digital universes
Excerpt from the Book
3.1. Point of view of the vendors
Even if the Metaverse is still in its development phase, various companies have already started to venture profound changes in their business models. Due to the fact that the Metaverse is regarded as the following quantum change, vendors see a grand potential in this evolution and want to participate in it.
As the Metaverse is an environment relying on socialization and human behavior, it is an uncontroversial certainty that there will be a demand for digital products just as in the physical world. This can be reasoned by the need of representation as well as the varying life standards within society. Buying clothes, owning a house or making use of activities will seem as important and essential in the Metaverse as it does in real life. Accordingly, creating and selling NFTs and digital goods are one opportunity, businesses could benefit from.
Using the example of Meta’s renewed vision, it becomes obvious that technology businesses intend to develop the most innovative tools in order to profit by the demand that could increase in near future. This strategy includes the improvement of headsets as well as the development of AR- and VR-glasses in order to optimize user experience. The higher the quality of the equipment is, the better are the chances for technology companies to keep up with their competitors.
