What are advantages of a small group?
1. Care. The main advantage of small groups is the realistic ability to genuinely care for one another. It is common sense that 20 small group leaders can do a better job of caring for 200 people than one pastor can. In countless conversations on the phone with my friend Benjamin Kannenberg who is one of the church leaders of the fast-growing Lakeside Church in Konstanz, I learned that their church life is basically happening within the small groups which meet weekly once or twice. On Sundays all the small groups meet for corporate worship. In the small group meetings they discuss the sermon of the previous Sunday. Questions, issues, problems, etc. are taken care of through the small group leaders.
2. Fostering growth. To make a person´s “church-experience” as beneficial as possible, that individual must be able to communicate freely and openly, something that may not happen in the congregational setting, due to its size. This is different in a small group setting. People meet each other and get to know each other in a more personal way, and they start trusting each other, which is the absolute basis for open and authentic relationships. Difficult and personal topics can be discussed and spiritual bondages and strongholds can be destroyed; truth can be spoken into each other´s lives (John 8:32). Indeed, research proves this point: 71% of the members of healthy small groups answered the question “I have a group in this church where I can discuss my personal problems” with ‘true’ or ‘very true.’ True accountability and genuine care that leads to an increased love for God and men, which is the ultimate fruit of spiritual maturity, will be the result. Being in small groups, the leaders have the possibility to help the small group members discover and develop their giftings and apply them appropriately.
