This term paper was created as part of a literature seminar on biblical stories. It deals with the modern adaptation of Christian dualism in the Amazon Prime series 'Good Omens'.
The TV series Good Omens (2019) is a third-person omniscient narration of the demon Crowley and the angel Aziraphale who have been living on Earth for over 6,000 years. Since they have loved their earthly way of life and surprisingly have become friends over time, they want to rescue the world by preventing the apocalypse, the end of the world, that will cause a war between Heaven and Hell.
Since the concept of Heaven is understood as the reward of good people after their death and Hell is seen as a punishment for bad people after their death, it is very uncommon that the respective messengers of Heaven (Aziraphale) and Hell (Crowley) are friends.

This paper aims to show that Christian dualism, known as the idea of Good and Evil but nothing in between, gets fundamentally challenged in the series 'Good Omens' (2019). It is particularly shown in the individual characters of the two protagonists in contrast to other characters who fit in the duality of fundamental Christianity.

This term paper provides a brief introduction to the topic. The analysis will show how the protagonists Crowley and Aziraphale especially challenge the dualistic concepts of Good and Evil. This will become even clearer by juxtaposing them with two characters who abide to their respective sides uncompromisingly; Gabriel and Beelzebub.

Research Objectives and Themes

This paper examines how the television adaptation of Good Omens (2019) destabilizes traditional Christian dualism by analyzing the nuanced character development of its protagonists and antagonists. It explores the blurred lines between binary concepts of "Good" and "Evil" as portrayed through the interactions and inner conflicts of angels and demons living on Earth.

  • The subversion of binary Christian morality.
  • Character arcs of Aziraphale and Crowley as agents of ambiguity.
  • The juxtaposition of traditional heavenly/hellish duties versus free will.
  • Critique of fundamentalist dualist structures in modern adaptations.

Excerpt from the Book

2 Christian Dualism

Dualism can have many different meanings. The term "dualism" comes from the Latin word "duo," meaning "two," and has been used in various philosophical and religious investigations throughout history. In general, dualism refers to the idea that there are two basic principles or types of things that are in some way in conflict or interaction with each other. (Robinson 2023: 1) Because dualism is significant in different areas of human life, such as philosophy, theology, and science, diverse questions have arisen that are still relevant to mankind. While philosophy poses the question of mind and body as opposing principles, Christian dualists "believe that Good and Evil – or God and the Devil – are independent and more less equal forces in the world." (Robinson 2023: 1)

To understand why the characters of the series Good Omens (2019) get portrayed in their respective ways, it is necessary to understand what is meant by the fundamental idea of Good and Evil in Christianity. Already ancient philosophers created different images of the Christian God and his idea of Good and evil, life and death. Thales v. Miles wrote: "Behold, I have set before your eyes good and evil, life and death; choose life. [...] For it calls good life, [...] but evil is the choice of the opposite. Good and life have the same purpose, namely to become God-loving." (Warkotsch 1973: 139) He added that the length of a human's life depends on how loving this human is and how much he is willing to live the truth, by which he means the divine values. Sokrates said: "The beauty of the soul consists in virtue, and vice versa the ugliness of the soul in vice." (Warkotsch 1973: 140) But, he also stresses that beauty comes from God and his wisdom.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the core focus of this research paper?

The paper examines how the TV adaptation of Good Omens (2019) acts as a critique of traditional Christian dualism by portraying characters who deviate from the binary roles of "Good" (Heaven) and "Evil" (Hell).

What are the primary thematic fields covered?

The key themes include theological dualism, character morality in media adaptations, the subversion of religious archetypes, and the tension between divine authority and individual free will.

What is the central research question?

The research investigates how the characters in Good Omens—specifically the main protagonists and antagonists—act as vehicles to challenge the traditional, non-overlapping binary structure of Christian theology.

Which scientific methods are applied?

The paper employs qualitative content analysis of the TV adaptation, juxtaposed with theological and philosophical literature on dualism, to evaluate character behavior and decision-making.

What does the main part of the paper address?

The main section provides an individual character analysis of Aziraphale, Crowley, Gabriel, and Beelzebub, followed by a comparative analysis of their reactions to their respective "sides" and the impending Apocalypse.

Which keywords characterize the essence of the work?

Key terms include Christian dualism, Good Omens, character moral ambiguity, narrative adaptation, binary opposition, and the agency of the protagonists in resisting predetermined roles.

How does Aziraphale's behavior specifically contradict his nature as an angel?

Aziraphale shows empathy, human-like doubt, and a willingness to betray his heavenly duties if he believes it prevents a greater harm, which complicates the notion that all heavenly creatures must be strictly obedient.

What makes Crowley stand out as a demon?

Crowley demonstrates genuine compassion and love for earthly life, showcasing that he is capable of forming meaningful friendships and prioritizing his own agency over the strict, destructive hierarchies of Hell.

Why is Gabriel considered an embodiment of strict dualism?

Gabriel represents the uncompromising, authoritative side of Heaven, often displaying arrogance and a total disregard for human agency or feelings, which acts as a foil to the protagonists' more nuanced moral path.

What conclusion does the author reach regarding the "good vs. evil" binary?

The author concludes that the series successfully shows that binary categories are insufficient for representing complex moral choices. Instead, empathy and free will allow characters to bridge the gap between perceived opposites.
