In the United States of America, older individuals' health-related quality of life has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The study's specific goals are to describe the prevalence and effects of the COVID-19 syndrome in older adults, to measure the physical and mental disability brought on by long-lasting symptoms, and to examine how older adults'perceptions of risk, anxiety, and depression change during the COVID-19 syndrome.

The results of this study reveal that older persons experience anxiety and sadness to varied degrees, as well as varying degrees of worry and fear about the condition. The chaos has had a profound influence on older folks, and society has reacted to it in both positive and harmful ways. Overall, the effect has made clear how critical it is to treat mental health issues and fightageism in society.

Further research is needed to fully understand the symptom makeup and severity, the expected clinical course, the impact on daily functioning, and the return to baseline health. It is important to address the unique challenges faced by older adults and
provide support to mitigate the negative impacts on their well-being.

Research Objectives and Themes

This study aims to investigate the long-term impact of the COVID-19 syndrome on older adults in the United States, specifically focusing on the prevalence of symptoms, their intensity, and their effects on daily functioning. Furthermore, the research explores the psychological burden experienced by this population, including shifts in risk perception, anxiety, and depression, while evaluating the societal response and the prevalence of ageism during the pandemic.

  • Prevalence and characterization of long-term COVID-19 symptoms in older adults.
  • Assessment of risk perceptions, anxiety, and depression among the elderly.
  • Impact of the pandemic on the health-related quality of life for older persons.
  • Consequences of social isolation and ageist attitudes on mental well-being.
  • Potential positive and negative societal responses to the needs of older citizens.

Excerpt from the Book

INTRODUCTION

The COVID-19 has had a tremendous effect on older persons in the United States. Although older males are considerably less concerned about the virus than their younger counterparts, research has revealed that older persons perceive COVID-19 risks to be higher than younger adults (Barber & Kim, 2020). Ageism has increased as a result of older persons being portrayed as a vulnerable group, which has resulted in isolation and a difference in how COVID-19's effects are perceived (Bergman et al., 2020). Due to their age and biological sex, older persons, and especially older men, are more likely to experience severe COVID-19 results (Márquez et al., 2020). Children may contribute to the virus spreading to their elderly family members and carers even though they often only have moderate illnesses (Snapiri et al., 2020). Bello-Chavolla et al. (2020) found that older Mexicans with comorbid diseases including obesity and diabetes were more likely to have severe COVID-19 outcomes. The severity and mortality of these illnesses are also made worse by social variables including access to private care and high social lag indices. Older people with a variety of comorbidities and complex medical conditions are more at risk for serious COVID-19 outcomes (Nanda et al., 2020). Income, perceived susceptibility to, and severity of COVID-19 are all factors that affect older people's age-related preventive behavior (Irigoyen-Camacho et al., 2020). Older adults in Nepal have a high perceived fear of COVID-19, which is influenced by factors such as increasing age and ethnicity (Yadav et al., 2021). The COVID-19 pandemic has had serious deleterious effects on the mental health of older adults worldwide, with separation from loved ones and conflicts, as well as residing in countries with higher income, predicting anxiety and depression (Tyler et al., 2021). With high assault and fatality rates among residents, nursing facilities have been particularly impacted by COVID-19 (Sacco et al., 2020). Understanding the effects of COVID-19 syndrome on older persons in the United States of America is the study's main goal.
