This article is about the benefits of picture books in foreign language teaching in elementary school. Different picture books are presented on the basis of Irma Ghosn's reasons.

The first step is to determine whether children's books, as authentic literature, have a motivating context for language learning. In order to check whether a book is really motivating, various aspects such as storyline, theme, language and illustration must be considered. Irma Ghosn uses "The Hungry Caterpillar" to show and explain these aspects. "We're going on a Bear Hunt"
by Michael Rosen (2003) is another good example to show these aspects. The book is about a family outing where the children imagine that they are hunting a bear. For this, they have to overcome various obstacles. Between the obstacles, the bear hunt is put into foreground in a kind of marching song. When they discover the bear, they flee and must go through the obstacles again to get back to their house. The theme of the book is a journey of discovery that every child can identify with. The curiosity and imagination of a child is clearly visible in the story and also the unstoppable urge of children to discover. Ghosn (2002) also states that a storyline should remain open to different interpretations. Here, the story offers that it's unclear if they really meet a bear in the end or if they just make it up. Moreover, it remains open to what extent the obstacles really are of the big scale described in the story.

Excerpt from the Book

Empathy building and social behaviour

Empathy building and social behaviour are important characteristics in children's literature and are also always guiding in stories. The characters change their thinking concepts and the readers or listeners gain insight into different perspectives. Irma Ghosn also points out these functions of books in class. She says that children's literature has the potential "to transform, to change attitudes, and to help eradicate prejudice while fostering empathy, tolerance, and an awareness of global problems" (2002:176) She further describes that these facts have already been proven in many researches. The book of “Rainbowfish” (Pfister 2007) is a very good example to illustrate this aspect. The book is about a unique rainbow fish, who has many shimmering scales. One day a "normal" fish asks for a scale. The rainbow fish reacts very arrogantly and dismissive. As a result, the rainbow fish is avoided by all the other fish in the entire ocean. Children may relate to the rejecting and selfish behaviour of the rainbow fish at first and might behave similarly in this situation. This makes identification with the rainbow fish straightforward. As the story continues, the rainbow fish learns that sharing its shimmering scales with the other fish is the only way to have fun with the others. The fish also notices that it does not become happy by the sole possession of material goods, in this example the scales, Through the rainbow fish's character change from egoistic to social behaviour, the children also experience this transformation. Thereby, they learn that sharing is an important part of living together in society.
