This paper aims to show the extent to which pronunciation is crucial in the assessment of speaking.

With the rediscovery of pronunciation instruction in ESL classrooms, the importance of pronunciation as an integral part of the language course in language proficiency came to the forefront. Reinforcing pronunciation was seen as particularly important as learners could have difficulty understanding if they had problems with pronunciation. In addition, teaching pronunciation could help learners to better understand native speakers and generally improve their own ability to communicate easily and effectively. This paper deals with the importance of pronunciation in the assessment of ESL language proficiency. The first part deals with the relevance of speaking skills for ESL learners and the definition of pronunciation. It also shows why pronunciation should be taught in ESL classes. In addition, it highlights what constitutes stable and acceptable pronunciation and how teachers can ensure that their students achieve good pronunciation. It also examines whether pronunciation plays a role as an evaluative aspect in the assessment of speaking. In the second part, the role of pronunciation in the assessment of speaking in ESL classes is discussed and ways of assessing pronunciation are presented.

Excerpt from the Book

3.1 The Role of Pronunciation in the Assessment of ESL Speaking

Pronunciation is crucial in many ways. However, the most important thing to note is whether the learner's poor pronunciation is making communication difficult. Therefore, the learner should ensure to speak as clearly as possible. Consequently, when assessing, teachers should consider that they can still fully understand what the learner is saying and assure that the learner can correctly pronounce a range of sounds. Both learning and teaching the pronunciation of another language is an enormous challenge for everyone involved, teachers as well as learners, especially when it takes place in a country where it is not spoken every day.

In addition, as mentioned in the literature, bad pronunciation could lead to misunderstanding of the speaker. Thus, it is particularly important to have good pronunciation practice. The dangers of wrong pronunciation lay in the grinding of incorrect intonation and pronunciation of the individual sounds and, ultimately, in the formation of heavy accents. On that score, superficial pronunciation training quickly leads to fossilization or the persistent presence of faulty pronunciation habits that cannot be learned later or are tough to learn again in the future. In this case, the chance to get closer to authentic English gets forfeited. Nevertheless, it is very challenging to offer decent pronunciation teaching and practice in a non-English speaking country.
