This term paper is devoted to the depiction of personal lives against the backdrop of the pivotal processes that take place on the national level. This problem will be analysed on the basis of two autobiographical comics ― Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi and American Widow by Alissa Torres. Despite two chronologically and geographically different stories, they represent a similar compositional pattern: the portrayal of a female protagonist that faces a critical political event and deals with it, experiencing its repercussions as well as adjusting her life to the new circumstances.

Research Objectives and Themes

This academic paper examines the intersection of personal life narratives and national historical events through the analysis of two autobiographical comics: Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis and Alissa Torres' American Widow. The research seeks to explore how state authority and major political upheavals influence individual protagonists, and how these experiences are mediated through specific artistic techniques within the "autographics" genre.

  • The depiction of individual life experiences within the context of major historical and political shifts.
  • Comparative analysis of how Iranian and American historical backdrops shape personal narratives.
  • Evaluation of paratextual elements, symbolic motifs, and the deliberate use of colour as communicative devices in comics.
  • The role of "crisis comics" in navigating trauma, identity, and political discourse.
  • The interaction between personal memory and national history in biographical graphic narratives.

Excerpt from the Book

3.1.1 Title

The first and, perhaps, defining paratextual element that reader meets on their way is a title. Reflecting on what a felicitous book title is like, Genette writes, “...a good title would say enough about the subject matter to stimulate curiosity and not enough to sate it” (1997: 92).

In the case of Persepolis, the title immediately sets the historical tone and attunes the reader to think of the story on a larger, nation-wide scale: ‘Persepolis’ is the name of the ancient capital of the Persian Empire, the state out of which present-day Iran has grown. For the author, it is crucial that her motherland be portrayed not as an inherently bad, rogue, terrorist state, but rather as a usurped land that once was great and prosperous, inhabited by decent people.

Similarly, the title “American Widow” illuminates the significance of the national aspects in the book ― for the author, it is principal that it is not any widow, but the American one. However, semantically this title is more complicated than Persepolis: Alissa Torres opens her book with two crucial landmarks ― her protagonist’s citizenship equated and interwoven with her, the protagonist's, personal status. It can therefore be said that a conflict between national and private is established from the point of the title.

3 Inside the Comics: This section offers an elaborate analysis of paratextual elements, symbols, and colour usage to demonstrate how the protagonists navigate their respective political and social environments.

4 Conclusion: The concluding chapter synthesizes the findings, confirming how autobiographical comics effectively bridge the gap between intimate personal experiences and transpersonal national histories.
