Research Objectives and Topics

  • Examination of consumerism, sexual freedom, and identity construction.

Excerpt from the Book

4.2.1 Ambivalence

Ambivalence is a quality that the society did not allow the traditional woman to own because she did not have a choice to choose her appearance. She was straightforward and did not have the right to look for a balance between several images in society. That is the opportunity for the post-feminist woman. All four characters in the series are ambivalent. Ambivalence means literally translated hesitation, change of opinion, uncertainty.

For example, Carrie dreams of a man who will make her happy and make her feel protected and loved, but at the same time she does not want to lose her independence. She wants the man beside her to accept her as she is without changing her. For this reason, many of her relationships fail. A typical example is Aidan's marriage proposal, which suggests that he is ready to give her the security she needs, and Carrie's refusal, respectively, which speaks of her fear of losing her independence. And perhaps because of this, a major role in her life plays her great love - Mr. Big. With him, she can remain independent, but he, on the other hand, does not provide her the desired security. She seeks a balance between these two qualities. Even the way Carrie dresses tells us about her different feelings and thoughts - we see her dressed in different styles and outfits (one day is extravagant, the next sporting, etc.).

Samantha's ambivalence is expressed through the fact that although Samantha is an independent and a successful woman which has "sex like a man", she managed to fall in love twice as part of the series. Once in Richard Wright, and secondly - in the apparently younger Jerry that she calls Smith. In the beginning their relationship is not serious. He is just another victory for Samantha. But after being diagnosed with breast cancer, Smith stays close to her and supports her, showing that he has feelings. After this gesture later, Samantha also admits that she has feelings for him as well and surrenders.
